highschool answered Sunday September 25 2011, 12:59 am: I'm answering out of experience. I was the shy kid in my class for quite some time, always longing to talk to someone but no matter what I could never build courage to start a conversation. It's actually pretty easy now that i learned how, believe it or not I went from being the shy loner to the popular girl who is friends with everyone.
Starting a conversation is REALLY easy. Put yourself in a positive attitude, walk over and just say "Hi." Thats all it takes. Sometimes saying Hi I'm _____ whats your name? can even work. Starting conversations is different for everyone. You may even say "Hi, I don't know you but we have friends in common." when you make some more friends.
Ive also found talking online (via Facebook) Is WAAAAAY easier for shy people.

You're just going to have to suck it up and initiate a conversation. "Hi, my name is..." is good or "Hey, how's it going?" works too. Then continue talking about similar interests (if you know any) or about your surroundings whether it be school, work, or etc. Your conversations may not be book length at first but talk to him as often as you can and after a while you'll be able to get a feel of interests or similarities an talk more and more.
