student loans

Question Posted Friday January 22 2010, 2:06 pm

i'm a 19 year old college freshman in need of student loans and i don't know where to begin. as of now i'm on the HOPE scholarship in Georgia meaning my tuition is paid for but everything else comes out of my mom's pocket. She's a single mom so it's a struggle and i've suggested student loans time and time again for months now but she has yet to fill out the FAFSA because her taxes are not filed, therefore i don't know how to go about getting loans. She will not take the time to sit down and file taxes in order to complete the FAFSA, and according to the website i can't declare myself as an independent until i'm like 24 or married or other random stuff so I don't know what to do. She is unmotivated and uninteresed in trying to help me figure out how to obtain a student loan however is always bitching about money to me. I have a part time job back home that i work at one weekend a month to stay on payroll and im trying to get a job where im at also but it still wont be enough. How can i go about getting a student loan asap WITHOUT fafsa? I looked at the Sallie Mae loans but apparently my school doesn't work with that organization and i need one that is legit. Help??

also i looked up some stuff about private loans, but on the website it talks about the money being sent directly to the school. is that the case with all private loans? of course the loan money would be going toward my education, but since my tuition is paid for by my scholarship, it'd be easier to have the money sent to me so that we can direct it towards housing, meals, etc. how would that work?

For private loans and loans through FASFA the money is sent to your school. The school inturn takes a very small portion for processing the money and then the school will send you a refund check for whatever the remaining balance after tuition, books, and etc.I get every penny of my loans back I also have a grant that covers all of my tuition. Your school will have a date every semster or quater when the refund checks are sent. The loans have to be used for school purposes. Housing, gas, and food are ok.

You should really try to have your mom fill out that FASFA because though that you may qualify for loans that the interst will not start untill you start to pay back the loan (unsubsidized loan). Also, with the FASFA you will not need a co-signer. A private loan you will need a co-signer. Where as private loans the interst starts the day you take out the loan (subsidized). Good luck I really hope your mom will fill that out for you. You may also want to talk with you Financial aid advisor about your mom not filing her taxs maybe there will be a way you can be an independent student. It never hurts to ask.
