Question about my dislocated knee

Question Posted Sunday August 16 2009, 7:00 am

Here is my situation... I am 20 and I dislocated my knee cap on Aug 1... It was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life! Way worse than labor even! I got it put back in place but then stopped using it out of fear and developed blood clots. I was in the hospital but I am fine now. However, it really hurts to walk and I cant straighten my leg too well and I cant lock my knee at all. This is my first injury, Before this the worst thing that happened to me was small cuts and scrapes so I'm not used to this and I have no knowledge of anything.

Here is my problem... I have become deathly afraid of my injury. It happened in the ocean (I LOVE the ocean, I was going to study marine biology and marine mammal care) but now I am afraid of it... I wont go back into it even if there are no waves. I also love Cheerleading and dance... its my passion but I also wont do it anymore... I was a very adventurous girl, there wasn't much that scared me and I was willing to try just about anything. I had a big passion and a lot of goals for things like sky diving, zip lining, cliff diving, scuba diving, etc. but now I am just scared. Now I know there are so many other things I could dislocate and I cant handle that pain again! No way!!

My question... My doctor told me, now that its already been dislocated, it can happen again more easily... it wont hurt as bad though and I'll just have to pop it back into place (the thought makes me cringe)... So I guess my question is what can I do to prevent this from happening? Is there a way I can still live my life and take risks without worrying about dislocating my knee? Are there certain foods that help increase strength in my knee, are there exercises, surgeries... I'll do anything. I know its pretty pathetic but I have no tolerance for pain and I am seriously scared. I was just starting to get my life in order and go out into the world when this happened. I seriously feel traumatized... Any type of advice will do...

Thank you!!

Hey so hear is the deal I dislocated both my knees before. And it hurt, like it hurt bad. And I am a total baby when it comes to pain. But really, my advice to you is to not be scared there is going to come a time where you need to take risks no matter what happens and when something does happen you have to take the good with the bad. I dont mean that for everything you do but there is no reason to be scared sure it hurt really really badly, I can realate to your pain, and being afraid and scared not to do anything to feel that pain or worse again, but I know for a fact if your leg heals up, it wont be easy to hurt again, and you just have to realize that people do hurt themselfs and sometimes it does hurt, but you dont have to give up something you love like cheerleading or being a marine biologist. Yes there is a lot of other limbs in your body you can dislocate but it does happen, and just think how misserable you would be when you wernt getting out and seeing the world, and really, your 20 and you like cheerleading and the ocean, and many more things, you have only dislocated it once!

I really hope you take my advice and move forward with your life, and not be scared to take risks again when your leg is healed. It will be a little scarry at first but you will come around belive me, I have dealt with this too.

Good luck with everything, Katie xx
