Prolonged use of birth control?

Question Posted Sunday May 25 2008, 6:56 pm

Recently my friend mentioned to me that he was listening to an old radio show on which women were discussing using birth control pills to eliminate thier periods. He suggested this as a convenient alternative to following the normal "three weeks on, one week off" cycle that I do with my current birth control. I was extremely critical, but decided to do some research on it. From what I've read, it sounds a lot less distruptive to ones body than you might assume. Women often skip their periods for three months at a time by staying on their birth control, take a week off, and then take it again for another three months with very few negative side effects. The risks include more erratic 'spotting' (small amounts of bleeding inbetween periods) and increased chances of the negative side effects common to contraceptive pill users. Now, of course, I plan to talk to my doctor about it, but I'm considering this as a possibility. The only thing is that all of the women in these studies were on a form of the pill as opposed to a contraceptive ring, which is what I use. It is called NuvaRing, and it basically releases the same hormones into your body as the pill does, just through a different method.
So my question is, has anyone tried this, either with pills or even better, when using NuvaRing? Any input would be much appreciated. :)

I have been on a variety of birth control pills and have even been advised my doctor at times to take 3 packs in a row. It was great, hardly ever bleeding however, the longer I continued this every time I did bleed my periods became heavier and longer until I was bleeding or about 10 days straight.

If you dont want to bleed....There are some forms of contraceptive that can pretty much stop you bleeding at all. Taking the mini-pill as opposed to a combined pill can have this effect or there is a contraceptive injection called Deppo Provera which lasts 3 months and many women experience no bleeding on this at all. I however tried it and it had the opposite effect and it had some pretty unpleasant side effects for me :( We all react to medications differently, the best thing you can do is talk to your doctor or wisit a womens health clinic, they will go through your options.
