how much will we spend on gas?

Question Posted Thursday August 23 2007, 7:53 pm

14/f.

My mom, aunt, 2 cousins (9 & 5), and I want to go to Orlando, Florida. We usually drive, which is about a 26 hour drive (including pit stops). We are driving from Missouri. The approximate amount of miles that it would take to get there would probably be around 1400 miles. I know this might be a little confusing, but if we would be taking our 2004 Honda Odyssey, how much money would we be spending on gas? Would flying be cheaper? I looked at Expedia listings and the price for roundtrip tickets from KCI to the main Orlando Airport, and that is approximately $1,400. We would also not have to spend money for a hotel, and we would get food on the plane.

I also do NOT want to be stuck in a car for the entire day (literally!) with my 2 cousins (9 & 5, fight about useless crap), so on the flight I would be able to maybe watch movies, listen to my iPod, stuff like that.

What would be cheaper? Flying or driving?

Additional info, added Thursday August 23 2007, 7:55 pm:
I was looking at flights on expedia.com, and using Delta. We want to go somewhere around late January, and February. (when it's nice there). We're going for the most of 2 weeks..

I have a 1.9 litre diesal car, and the rule of thumb is 100 miles for £10. So for me, 1400 miles would cost around £140. The price of diesal here is around £1 per litre.

I have no idea how much the fuel costs in America, or how big the engine is in your car, but I do know that fuel is much cheaper over there, so whereas it might cast me the equivalent of $300 to go 1400 miles, it'll probably cost you less.

So really, driving should be incredibly cheap compared to flying.

well first off, i live in St. louis and its only about an 18 hour drive to Orlando. also its only about 1000 miles from here. but either way driving would be a lot cheaper than flying. if you do drive just try to enjoy the time with your family. that is what vacations are about. i know it sucks being stuck in a car that long but you can always bring your Ipod or CD player or a portable DVD player if you have one. that way you all can watch a movie together.
