Basically yes its sticking something in a hole.
But thats not what its always about, most girls rub the clitoris.
By sticking something inside you, its just imitating a penis, but depending what you place within you is going to give a different feel.
I wouldnt suggest using anything random.
Common ones to use are hairbrush ends.
I havent ever tried this myself but I would still recommend using a vibrator(dildo)
Its probably just your vaginal wall that you have hit, perhaps the object used was to large.
Try purchsing a vibrator and see how it feels.
