Ive seen cheerleaders use this like barrel curls hairpeice to add to their hair, to make it into a ponytail. I dont get it.. why dont they just use their own hair, but curl it? or what if their hair was already curly? why do they do that?

The reason why some teams do this is a lot of girls cannot get curls to stay in and when we are running around doing our routine and even preparation for it they definitely tend to fall out. Everynight before competitions we have to put our hair in rollers and then take them out before we go on and hope it curled right. This is why the hair pieces work so well. Also, they work well for girls who have really short uncurlable hair but yes some girls had naturally curly hair and didn't have to worry about any of these things.
Hope I helped
