OK well i am starting to play the guitar, and i have 2 questions.
1: What are octaves?
2: How does someone do the band technique to make one string on a fret sound like a higher pitched note than normal? (Real specific please, ive heard how to do so a number of times but i never get it right)

1.an octave is a group of 8 notes so if someone says to play a note an octave higher...you would play eight notes above that one.Instead of Open E on the 6th string you would play the E on the 2nd fret of the 4th string.
2.im not exactly sure of what you're asking but I think what you may be talking about is different postions. For example each string has 12 frets & the 12th fret of each string is the same note as the string when it is played open. say you want to play an E on the first string (which is open)...but you want to play it higher, then you hold the 12 fret on the 1st string and this would be a high E but in 12th position. I know it sounds confusing.
