Basically, Id say go to www.invisalign.com It shows the complete process of invisible braces, which basically works the same as regular metal braces. The cost for those range from $2500 - $5000, but if you have orthidontal insurance it should cover most of it. If not they have nifty payment plans where you can pay about 100 a month to pay them off :) I've been looking into it because I want my teeth to be perfect haha. I'd give them a call and get a consultation, it couldnt hurt!

Um..."Tooth alignment" as you call it is actually Orthodontistry. Basically, braces. The dentist can't surgically line all your teeth up in one procedure. I went through braces for 2 years and I can honestly say, while it was intimidating at first, it's something that I'm incredibly glad I did when I saw how nice my teeth looked afterwards.

Generally, you won't need to be "put to sleep" during any part of the process. Braces can take anywhere from a few months to several years depending on how much "alignment" you need done. The treatment can cost up to several thousand dollars, so be sure you want to do it before you spend a nice bucket of money.

Wikipedia has a nice long article explaining all the details about orthodontal work done:
