when a girl says "We're just friends- nothing more," does that really mean to lay off her?

Well if this girl has been your friend for a while, that could mean that she enjoys being your friend, and doesn't want to ruin your friendship by going out. If you were never really friends with this girl than that could just be a way of saying that you shouldn't ask again, but she would like to be friends.
