Can you put clour into a tattoo that has been shaded?

ok, so say one got a tattoo but only using shades of black, later could one put colour into the parts that were shaded with grey?

i want to get a tattoo, but i dont want colour.. nto yet at least, so i want to know if i can shade it, or id i should just leave it as outlines.
