French translation

Question Posted Wednesday November 30 2005, 5:54 pm

Hi - anyone who can speak French
I'm having trouble translating this expression and wondered if anyone could help

"he had eyes only for the princess" or "he only had eyes for the princess"

meaning that he loved only her, he didn't look at other girls.

thanks!

Additional info, added Friday December 2 2005, 3:07 pm:
I just need to clarify - I want an idiomatic, equivalent translation. I am an advanced student of French myself, and so I can make literal translations with no problem, I just don't think a literal translation will carry the same meaning. So - a native French speaker please, can you give me an equivalent!.

I always go there for translations, lol.

He only had eyes for the princess
Il avait seulement des yeux pour la princesse

He didn't look at other girls
Il n'a pas regardé d'autres filles

He loved only her
Il a aimé seulement elle

Hope i helped =)

Here's what I came up with as the closest expression.

"Il n'avait d'yeux que pour la princesse."

"He only had eyes for the princess"

"he loved only her"

"Il n'amait les filles que la princesse."

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) If you go to that website, you can type it in yourself.

I came up with:

He had eyes only for the princess: Il avait des yeux seulement pour la princesse

He only had eyes for the princess: Il avait seulement des yeux pour la princesse

He loved only her: Il a aimé seulement elle

He didn't look at other girls: Il n'a pas regardé d'autres filles

Keep in mind these translations may not be EXACT. It's a computer.. Not a French teacher. But I hope that helped =)
