You do not need it for AIM backgrounds, but from my HTML days, any place that uses HTML can get a new background color using:
<body bgcolor="#CCCCCC">, changing #CCCCCC to what you want, and a </Body> at the end of the page.

For AIM, you don't need to use a hex code. They already have plenty different colored backgrounds and texts.
