I'm the same way. I'm shy too. Well, it seems that you are an aquaintance to this guy. That's a good start. At least he knows you. Because you don't have a class with him, I think the only chances you have to talk to him is lunch right? Well, you could start a conversation with him there. Assuming you just started school, you could ask him what classes he has. What he's doing in that class. Ask him what he's up to whenever you see him. You know, just be his friend. After awhile, you could say that you wish that you could talk to him longer. That's where you could ask for his IM screen name. (I find it easier to talk to a person over the internet) That way, you can talk whenever you're both online. I hope I helped. I find it hard to hold a conversation with a cute girl also... Good luck!
