i think you should still continue to call him and talk to him.. if he shows signs of being annoyed with you then he's dumb. unless you are pushing it and calling him 24/7 like a groupie. cause then he would have a right to be annoyed. just call him and talk to him about... well whatever you want. just don't become so fixed on him that you don't notice what or more specifically, who, is out there.
