How Fancy is Fancy Enough?

So, I've been taking salsa lessons with my boyfriend for a while, and now am thinking about what I'll wear to prom.
"Traditionally" the style seems to be to wear a sort of long tube shape, something that I find rather borring. I'd like to wear something a little more fun and different.
I'm thinking of either this:

I've been told by a friend or two that people generally wear more formal, traditional things for prom.
Ought I go for the norm?

Oh, sorry. I wanted to mention that since my boyfriend and I have gotten so good at Salsa and Swing, I'd like to wear a dress I can dance in, that would look good with the twirls styles of those dances..
