My boyfriend has depression

Question Posted Friday October 8 2004, 9:36 am

hey, my boyfriend has been going to the doctors bc they think he has depression. he will fall into these moods where he will get really quiet and not know why he's feeling like this and he just feels really shitty about everything, i asked if it was ever about me, and he told me that i was the only thing that made him happy. i just wanna know how to deal with it bc whenever he gets like that i just get a pit in my stomach and i feel so terrible. i need advice on how to deal with it or what to say to him to get him out of that mood? thanks!

Your boyfriend is lucky to have someone he can share his troubles with, but if his depression is indeed "serious," he may need professional help too. However, he may not be able to get to that point alone. If he's not open to the therapist idea or seems too overwhelmed by his negative feelings to find one for himself, perhaps you can do some research. Also, you might want to encourage him to tell his parents about what's going on, if he hasn't already. Meanwhile, I suggest you make sure you're taking care of yourself. Worrying about and helping someone who's depressed can really wear a person down. The hardest thing for people like you two can be realizing that love alone may not be enough to help either of you with the stress of serious depression. I hope everything works out for you.
Good Luck
