They are the exploitation of superstition to threaten the recipient with bad luck or even physical violence or death if he or she "breaks the chain" and refuses to adhere to the conditions set out in the letter.
The bible says:
Isaiah 65:11 But you are among those forsaking Jehovah,
Those forgetting my holy mountain,
Those setting a table for the god of Good Luck,
And those filling up cups of mixed wine for the god of Destiny.
Luck and superstition are ploys satan uses. 15 Today true Christians heed the warning found at Isaiah 65:11, 12. They do not believe in “Good Luck,” as if it were some kind of supernatural force able to bestow favors. Refusing to squander their material possessions in trying to appease “the god of Good Luck,” they avoid all forms of gambling. They are convinced that those devoting themselves to this god will eventually lose everything, for to such ones Jehovah says: “I will destine you men to the sword.” [ Ckitty0's advice column | Ask Ckitty0 A Question ]
Capri answered Wednesday August 6 2014, 2:53 am: So, by the sound of this question, you are torn between believing your mom, and believing a stupid bullcrap chain letter. Look, all those chain letters are stupid nonsense, and they are made up by bullies and trolls who tell lies to scare you into spamming the net with their junk. Think about it. If chain letters were real, not even bow and arrows, or guns or any weaponry would've been invented to carry out wars, because the human race would've wiped itself out simply by spreading chain letters long ago. If chain letters were real, computers would be treated as weapons of mass-destruction and not sold to the general public.
Chain letters are lies. The devil is often called the prince of darkness, or the father of lies. so you can reach a conclusion there. One thing I will say for sure is that chain letters don't come from God. And all you have to do is disbelieve chain letters and rest the devil - I'm sure your mom has taught you that, too.
Not everything can be thought of in terms as from the devil or not, but chain letters are a form of online bullying done by anonymous cowards who have managed to scare someone who has reposted one that you saw. Don't be scared like the person you saw repost it. Don't let online bullies get the better of you. [ Capri's advice column | Ask Capri A Question ]

Mindlessmarbles answered Tuesday August 5 2014, 1:30 pm: No, it is not the work of the devil, but nor is it gods work. Chain letters were made by extremely ignorant people looking for their emails or texts to be sent around and go viral and scare their friends. Don't worry, it's not real. Only fictitious nonsense that people send around to scare others. hope this helped! [ Mindlessmarbles's advice column | Ask Mindlessmarbles A Question ]
