LM answered Sunday November 12 2006, 8:40 pm:
L= length
W= width

P = 2L + 2W
(perimenter is twice the length plus twice the width)

L = 2W + 3
(the length is three more than twice the width)

2L + 2W= 36
(twice the length plus twice the width is 36)

now, take the last equation and replace L with 2W + 3. You just eliminated one variable.

Now you're left with 2(2W+3)+2W=36.
Distribute. 4W+6+2W=36, and simplify. 6W = 30.

Divide both sides by six and you're left with W=5. So, the width is five.

Go back to L=2W+3 and plug in your new value for W. L=2(5)+3. Simplfy. L=13

Make X stand for the width. Since the length is two times the width plus three, 2X+3 stands for the length. The perimiter is the sum of all of the sides. There are two widths and two lengths in a rectangle. So, you multiply the width times two, and multiply the length times two.

So, the equation would be

2X + 2(2X+3) = 36

Problem solving can come hard for some people. That's why I helped explain how to come up with the equation to you. I'm not going to tell you how to solve the problem because this isn't a website for help with your homework. Look in your math book and you will find the instructions if you don't know how to solve it from there. Good luck. :)
