Question Posted Sunday September 26 2004, 4:12 pm

I have to play the piano in front of about 100 people in like, three hours, and I'm leaving in twenty minutes because I have to be there early. Anyway, I've done it before, but I was like ten so I didn't care what I sounded like. I have the song memorized and I'll still have the music in front of me, I've played it a zillion times, but I am INCREDIBLY nervous. I'm naturally a nervous person. My stomach is already in knots and when I think about it my palms sweat. The last time I played, I tried to be loud and my fingers and hands were so sweaty they slipped off the keys. Any experiances or help?

Additional info, added Sunday September 26 2004, 4:16 pm:
My other problem is the last time I played and messed up, I was 12 (I'm 13 now) and I BAWLED. Literally, I could not stop crying becasue the mistake was very noticable, even my mom who hadn't ever heard the song noticed it and I felt like really small and stupid and embarrassed. It's really horrible to cry in front of all my friends, who are going to be there, and I can never stop myself from it..

OH! I can give good advice about this. I used to get terrible stage fright and then, as dumb as it sounds, I read a book. It's called "The Inner Game of Music," and it's actually really good. What always calms me down is giving myself permission to be nervous, as stupid as it seems. Like, if your hands are sweaty, tell yourself (mentally) that they have PERMISSION to be sweaty, and then you won't worry about it anymore. There's a lot more stuff about breathing and crap, but it's a good book. Read it.

i do the same thing only in gymnastics and they way i get over my fears is my talking to my self before i get up and go and say "ok you can do it. its just like at practice" so pretend you are practing and block out the the people who are listening to you. i hoped i helped.

umm yeah. i'm in a string group that consists of players from 6th grade to 12th. i was in sixth grade and it was my first concert with them. well when i was walking on stage, i tripped over a stand and fell flat on my viola (like a violin but you knew that). umm it broke and died. i couldn't play in that concert and the seniors made fun of me for the rest of the year, and my stand partner still makes funn of me.

pretend your in your room (or where ever your piano is) and that there's no one in the world there listening.

or maybe theres some one special you can dedicate it to (in your head) and that will make you play great. i do that for big basketball games. i always play well after i do that.

good luck. i wish i played the piano. saxophone and viola just isn't enough any more. lol

I went to a piano thing (most boring thing ever lol), and like most people that listen dont even know if you mess up if you do small mistakes. So dont worry about it, if you mess up just act like nothing happend and most people dont notice it. Good luck!
