My 12 year old son recently told me that he had no friends and i just thought it was a phase until i popped into the lunchroom one day and he was sitting alone with no one at his table.

Sorry for such brief details but my iphone has 2% battery (link)
My 13 year old brother had the same problem growing up. He has a form of Autism called Asperger's disease, which makes it hard for him to form social relationships with people, such as making friends and keeping them. He finally found some though, but I don't really think he'd care if he had them or not. I'm a sophomore in high school, and Autism Speaks came and visited our classes. There were a few kids on the video they showed us with the same disease as my brother, and I feel like this is quite common. Does not having friends bother him? Does he have a VERY strong interest in a certain field or subject? That's a common sign. I wouldn't necessarily worry, he'll find people like him, or people who want to be around him for who he is. Although I do worry about my brother from time to time, he always does something to reassure me that he'll be okay. I feel like everyone has something different in their brain, it's just people like them that have the more rare cases.
