how do you COMPLETELY PERMANENTLY delete a picture off of your computer wiht no way of bring it back?!?! plz help asap thank you! (link)
|
Wow....just wow....People, don't answer a question unless you can provide correct information.
When you delete a file, Windows takes the easy path. It doesn’t overwrite or blank out the file’s data. Instead, the OS zeroes out the FAT values for the clusters containing the data and changes the first letter of the file’s name in the disk directory.
To actually delete a file so that it is unrecoverable, you will need to overwrite it with random 1's and 0's. Many programs will do this, spybot search and destroy has an option to securely delete files. It's available free on the internet.
*Note: A previous answer stated that you may use the defragmentation utility in Windows to delete a file, while this is true, defragging will overwrite the file, it takes a long time and isn't really practical.

Okay, so my AVG Free already expired. I tried updating it but then this dialogue box appeared saying that the download cannot continue because some files were corrupt and everything.... Now I have a prob cuz my computer is infected with virus and I can't take it off!
I really, really need some advice on what antivirus to get as soon as possible. And please, I need a FREE one.... (link)
|
Wait....what?
Quote: "Okay, so my AVG Free already expired."
So a free program has expired on you...
Anyway, try uninstalling AVG then reinstalling it, if that doesn't work, try avast. The problem with these free antivirus programs is that they're passive scanners. (although I believe AVG has some active aspect to it) You need to actually purchase or **illegally download an active scanner such as Nortons Antivirus or Mcafee or even Kaspersky to keep the computer clean.
The problem with passive scanners is that you have to manually run them, this means that they can't catch a virus until it's on the system and/or running. Then, in some cases they can't get rid of it because it's being used by the OS and access to it has been denied. An active scanner will actively can you files and watch for viruses. It will get rid of them before they have a chance to do any damage.

Hey everytime like when I use the mouse the cursor like moves in random places and not going in the direction it's supposed to go. It like moves on its own sometimes. Well it happens only sometimes but now its happening more often and its getting annoying. Whats the problem? (link)

Is it an optical, laser, or ball mouse. If it's a ball mouse, try removing the ball and cleaning the rollers and the ball itself.

I want to get someone a computer for Christmas Im thinking a laptop enless they're worse then a desktop. So would it be better to get a laptop or a desk top and what ones would be good to get like the brand processor stuff like that?/? (link)
|
Wow, every other answer was garbage. I'll see if I can clear this up.
If the person already has a desktop and it's relatively new (came with XP) then they probably don't need a new desktop. You do need to keep in mind the pros and cons of desktops and laptops.
Real quick though: Somebody below said that laptops are faster....WTF? Laptops are the same thing as desktops, there's no real hardware difference other then that it's squeezed in a small case. System speed is going to depend on hardware speed. Faster processor, faster/more RAM, motherboard bus speed, hard drive RPM, etc. To be honest, desktops have the possibility to be much faster then most laptops due to the fact that they're far more expandable.
Pros and Cons
=============
Laptop
pro: portability
con: little expandability
Desktop
pro: expandability
con: little portability
^See what i'm saying. Pretty much the same. Now, on to what you need to know to decide what to purchase. Do they play games? If so, gaming laptops will usually run you around $2000+, while you can spend $800 on a desktop and purchase a graphics card for it and be good to go.
Some people will argue "I want wireless, my desktop can't use wireless internet"

Sory this is in the wrong category. But I need help.
I was in music class yesterday and we were bringing in different cds that we wanted to hear. So a kid in my class brought a cd that he made with his own rap voice in it. To me that was really cool. He even has his own music page in myspace where in cds he has his own music. How did he do that?. How can you put your own voice in a cd?. Like any artist does. Is there any easy way to do it?. Please help thanks! (link)

Answerer before me: FAIL.
Download the instrumental version of a song, that means it's just the music, no lyrics. Get an audio mixing program such as cool edit, buy a microphone, plug it in.....the rest is pretty clear.

Hey everyone! Well, I've never heard of limewire until the other day from a friend. So, I started to use it but my parents are concerened that it is illegal. is it leagal? cause some people at school say it is leagal and others say it is illegal. i need to know! wut happenes if you use it and it is illegal??thanks!! (link)
|
LimeWire is legal, the concern is focused towards what you use it for. If you download music and you haven't paid for it in some way(CD, itunes, etc) then you have officially stolen that song which is.....illegal. Same thing goes for downloading movies, software, games, etc.
Basically, if you're using it to download anything that you would normally have to pay for, then yes, you are breaking the law. People have been taken to court for this so don't be an ass. The use of the program however, is legal in and of itself.

I just cant download torrents. I start the hole process and it never starts itself. The speed is 0kbps even after hours or even days. (link)

The shortcut still says internet but the internet explorer icon has been replaced with a picture of the world. When I click on it, it opens my internet options. Can someone tell me how to get my internet explorer back without wiping out my computer? Please and Thank You! (link)

Start > All Programs > *right click Internet Explorer > Send to desktop (create shortcut)

What are good firewalls that are downloadable from the internet? I want to give my computer extra protection so I'm thinking of downloading one. Also what are good pop-up blockers (downloadable)?
I'd really appreciate any answers ;). (link)

I'm looking to buy a laptop. I download a lot of music. How many GB's are ideal? (link)
|
If you're worried about music storage, then take this into consideration, 1 gigabyte is approximately 1024 megabytes, we'll round this down to 1000 to make the calculations easier. Your average song is about 4 megabytes, usually less, that's 250 songs per gigabyte, multiply that times 20 and you get 5,000 songs, that's a lot of music. If you still think you need more space, an 80 gigabyte drive will hold 20,000 songs, 160 gigabyte, 40,000 songs...you get the point. Now, I didn't take into account your OS install or other applications, regardless, if music is your top priority, 80 gigabytes will do just fine.

ok well my brother says he can get on my windows xp name without knowing my password. can he really do that? if so, how? (link)
|
Yes, Windows does keep an Administrative account active in safe mode by default, however, it is possible to remove this account. There is also another way, it's more advanced then the administrative account, but you failed to mention whether or not your brother was computer suave or not. This 'method' involves stealing the SAM file and cracking it to get the passwords. Any more information will turn this into a tutorial, if anybody really wants to know how, simple google the string, 'cracking the SAM'.

So, my computer got a huuuge virus. It infected our entire registry and eventually erased the hard drive and I lost all my files. This is the third time it's happened to me. I was actually in the middle of backing up my files, so don't tell me to do that. I can re-import all the music I had (I have most of the CDs and I'll borrow the rest from friends) and all I lost were all my saved AIM chats.
The comouter guy said AIM lets in certain viruses, but I really doubt that being signed on for about three hours a day allowed someone to hack my computer to the point of having NO hard drive left whatsoever. I know you can get those "annoyance" viruses that send messages to your whole buddy list, but nothing this serious
My dad continues to blame me for all these problems, and I'll admit that it's partially my fault (www.lyricsspot.com got hacked or whatever, and I got a Trojan from it, but I erased it compeltely before it infected the computer). However, he's left his email open, and I've seen his internet history. He goes on dating sites, "friend" sites, et cetera. I know he's not getting these by accident because he even has an account. I've gotten popups from the same site, and it's not the kind of thing I should be seeing, put it that way. I'm pretty sure we got the virus that destroyed our computer (for the THIRD TIME!!!) from one of these sites.
So I guess this is sort of a two-part question- what virus was this and HOW DID IT GET IN??? we have firewalls, I do three virus scans twice a day, and the worst site I go on is myspace!! Also, is there a way to approach my dad about this without him accusing me of spying on him?
Sorry it's so long (and the two questions are related so I didn't know how to separate them) but any help is much appreciated! (link)
|
Well, first off, how do you know that your data is 'destroyed', what caused you to believe that you had a virus? What was it that happened? You failed to tell us what virus scanner you were using. You also need to be running anti-spyware of some sort. I recommend the free and powerful 'spybot search and destroy' (links at the bottom). As for your lost data, it's most likely not due to a virus. Viruses aren't usually written to 'destroy your HD'. You said you were backing up your data, how were you doing this?
Do you use Internet Explorer? Run firefox, some people will argue against this, but I like it, so run it... Next, what is it that you download? Is your version of XP up to date? Auto-update?
I need more information before I can assess the situation...

i have an acer laptop, and it's hooked up onto the charger and everything, but my computer says its running on the battery. This is bad because 1. i checked everything and it's all connect right, and 2. my computer only has about a half hour of battery life
what could be wrong? (link)
|
A lot of laptops will show the battery when in fact they're running off of AC. This is to indicate that the batter is being charged while you use the laptop.

I was playing Settlers IV when I heard a loud bang, I wasn't sure where the noise came from so I continued to play the game. The music stopped but all other sounds could still be heard. When I finished playing I tried to take the disc out but the drawer would not open. We managed eventually to open it with a carefully placed paper clip. The disc had exploded inside the disc drive. Pieces everywhere! My husband had to take out the whole disc drive to retrieve the pieces. Does anyone know a way I can continue to play this game without having to buy another one, and are exploding discs a common problem? I had never heard of this before.
Thanks (link)
|
No, exploding CD's are not a common problem, but they do happen. Usually to force a CD to explode you've got to have at least a > 40x CD-ROM drive. That's nearly 9000 RPM and will cause even a slightly damaged CD to explode. You could try contacting the company and let them know what happened, see if they'll sympathize with you, otherwise try a bittorrent site, if you use your product key that you purchased you should be fine.

Which is better and easier to use: Windows Movie Maker or Adobe(I forgot what's the specific name of the program, though)?
Also, please try to give me the different features of the two... Our class is making a film for our project and I need to learn how to edit soooo bad....
Thanks in advance! (link)

Ease of use and quality are often unfortunatly inversely proportional.
Adobe premier pro and after effects, while being significantly more complex then windows move maker, offer a far superior set of effects, styles, and all around quality of the final product. Many tutorials do exist to help in the learning process.
If all you want is played out static intros and rising or falling text, go with movie maker. Premier pro has a relatively simple interface for trimming, cutting, and moving clips and parts of clips around. Overlaying audio, moving clip audio, music etc. is pretty simple. They are expensive, but I believe they offer month long trials, or something to that extent.
After effects allows you to work in 3d with your clip, allowing you to really have some fun, but be wary, it will grab and tight to your systems resources and always beg for more. Make sure you've at least got a 2.6GHZ machine, at least 512MB of ram, and some space to store the final renders.

yeahuve tried diffrent cdsan dvds, no diffrnce, its something wrong with the actual hardware i think but im not sure how to fix it (link)
|
Fixing a dvd burner without prior knowledge on the inner workings of one isn't smart. There's not much danger, but the chance of actually fixing it for less then it costs to simply buy a new one are slim. I hate to give bad news such as this, but it's true.
