I watched Donnie Darko for the first time today, and I had a hard time "getting" it. I read through various websites, and I'm still struggling. I feel so stupid asking this, but could somebody relay it back to me in layman's terms? I might just have to watch it again, but oh well...

your really not SUPPOSED to get it. its actually based on the short story "The Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge", in which a man is being hung, but when he falls from the bridge, the rope around his neck breaks, and he is able to swim away while his enemy is shooting at him. so basically he gets home, opens his door, sees his wife, then he wakes up to find its all just a daydream. he ends up dying on the side of the bridge, hanging by a rope....
So there you go, now you know the original story.
