I am too old and out of shape to beat around the bush so I'll give it to you straight. If you want sugarcoating go to the candy store, you won't find it here. Sometimes a little good old fashioned honesty is just what the doctor ordered!

My family has tried to help my grandmother fix her house but it is beyond repair. Her house is coming up out of the ground, you can see the foundation outside. Most of the rooms don't have electricity, so she has lamps. She refuses to move in with other family members or get another place because she's been living in her house for 40 years and spent a lot of money on it and doesn't want to leave it. She is 80 years old and refuses to get help. Her walls in the house are splitting, she now has water leaking all over the house and won't call a plumber or electrician because they cost too much and she doesn't want to get her house condemned.
She's a hoarder and has junk all over the house piled up in most rooms. She has roaches REALLY BAD and she has rats. She has holes in the ceiling and she throws food all over the kitchen. She can't cook because the gas isn't on. she refuses to throw away junk and trash.
There's no gas, no bad plumbing and the kitchen and bathroom are beyond repair. Also there's mold growing out of the vents and she has rats living in the attic. The electricity works but the electrical wiring isn't proper and she's has to run like 5 heaters & fans, a computer and 3 TV's off of extension cords because most of the plugs don't work, not to mention lamps.
Famiy has welcomed her to stay with them if she please, it's not healthy for her to stay in that house. The restroom is gross and she has to heat up water to wash off and she has to pour water in the toilet to flush it. (link)

If your grandmother is 80 years old it is possible that she is starting to experience some dementia. She is in a very unsafe environment right now and she needs to be removed as soon as possible. Your parents(or their siblings) need to step in and take over her affairs. She is obviously no longer capable of making good decisions for herself. They need to have her checked out by a doctor to determine the cause of her behaviors. If her doctors decide that she is capable of living on her own then your parents could find her a small easy to care for apartment and bring only the things she needs from her house. It sounds like she will need a lot of checking up on. If there is an agency on aging and home nursing available to her those may be some services that her doctor will recommend as well. I don't think the house needs to be condemned in order to get her out. In some areas once a house is condemned then the owners only have so long to repair it or have it demolished. This could put additional financial and emotional stress on your family. I think if your parents get the agency on aging involved they will help to go through the courts if necessary to get her removed from there and into safe housing. You are a very caring granddaughter and your grandma is very lucky to have someone who cares about her so much! Good luck with this!

My room is a darkish red color and we are renting the house so I can't paint it a different color. It's summer and I want to add some summer flare but I don't exactly know how with the wall color which to me is more of a winter color. I also have zebra print curtains which I don't know if my mom will let me get new ones because she just brought them a little before spring. I don't know what I should do, please help! (link)

Pittguy has some excellent ideas. Running with his summer theme here are a few more ideas. If mom won't let you get new curtains you could try this: take down the zebra print but leave your blinds up. Buy some of those fishnets at the dollar store (like people use to hold stuffed animals), tie a knot at each end and wrap them over your curtain rods. They are very inexpensive. You can probably do this for under $10. Now you have sandy and red theme! Add a poster of a beautiful sunset, some flowers with yellow and orange(Hawaiian style),some sea shells, hang a couple of colorful leis around the room(maybe over the bedpost) and voila! you now have a beach house bedroom! Don't forget the ambiance, ask mom to get you some Hawaiian scented air fresheners and for some great beach theme lighting put some sand in mason jars and add those little battery operated flicker candles, then tie some raffia or twine around the jar and maybe glue on a few sea shells. (You can buy these candles at the dollar tree for a buck!)Oh, girl there is so much you can do with this and so much fun doing it! Good luck!

I will be moving soon and I know in my head what I want my new bedroom to look like but I don't actually know the name of the style, so that other people know what I'm talking about.
I'd call it an Indian Bohemian princess bedroom. Fabricy walls, bright colours, different textures and patterns. I just need to know what to call that, so I will be able to buy the materials to make my dream room. (link)

I think you are pretty much describing a Bohemian or \"BOHO\" style. I don\'t think anyone is going to have trouble understanding what you mean. I\'ll bet it is going to be beautiful!

I have a burgundy room and my grandmother got zebra print curtains for my room. The problem is I don't know what type of bed set to get. I was going to get black or white but then I saw that the curtains aren't a white the white part is like silver. So my question is if I got a white bed set would it look okay? And I don't want black because I fear it will be to much black if my dresser is black too! My second question is I want throw pillows but I don't know what colors or prints. I want to incorporate pink because it's my favorite color but how could I do that either? (link)

I think a light gray or silver comforter set would look awesome with burgundy walls and zebra print curtains. You could add some zebra, pink, black and/ or burgundy throw pillows and throws. I think the pink will work with this color scheme in small doses like maybe throw pillows or rugs.

Hi there! I have a shower that is really tall, and normal shower curtains don't seem to ever be long enough. I am tired of wet floors, so I bought one on eBay that claimed to be longer, and it was, by about an inch. :) Can you help me find a long enough curtain to keep me from having to mop after showers? THANKS! (link)
|
If I were you I think I would lower the shower bar. If that is not an option then you could sew another piece to the bottom of your cloth curtain. If I was going to do this I would look for another shower curtain that compliments the one you have. For example if yours is white with pink flowers you could find a solid pink ruffled curtain and attach it on about 2/3\'s of the way down. Or you could do something bold and unexpected like polka dots and stripes or black and neon. Whatever suits your taste and decor will work. If you only have one bar you may have to hang your plastic liner off of the holes in your shower curtain to make it long enough too or you could just add a second spring tension bar. You do have quite a few options for this problem. I hope it all works out the way you want it to look!

My husband and I have fallen on hard times and can't afford to keep an apartment, so we've resorted to moving back to my mom and dad's in my old bedroom. There's limited space, and we'll have to share a kitchen. What can I do to make this feel more like home for us? (link)
|
For now you will have to make your room your haven. Involve your husband and find out what would make it seem homey and comfortable for him. Combine your tastes and come up with a style that is unique to you as a couple. Maybe you like ruffles and he likes industrial. I'm picturing a white ruffled bedspread and industrial hanging lights with pulleys on either side bed with a small camouflage throw pillow(if he likes hunting) and maybe a wood and metal chair or stool for a nightstand! Some awesome black and white photos of your wedding day grouped together on a wall will keep the memory of that beautiful day fresh in your minds as you go through these trying times. You could put a wall word that has meaning to you both over the bed(like DREAM or IMAGINE)so you never lose sight of what you want for the future. Remember this is going to be a much harder transition for him since this was never his room before. If at all possible make as many changes as you can so that it doesn't still reflect who you were as a single girl. He needs to feel that while you are here it is his room as well. Good luck to you both!

There is a lot you can do with this. Crates come to mind right away. You can buy inexpensive wooden crates at WalMart, paint them if you like and use them for bedside tables. Pillows, lamps, baskets, throws, and wall art can all be purchased at second hand stores for very little. You might even want to take photos of family and pets from home, get black and white prints enlarged and frame them. Wooden wall letters or stick on wall letters are also an inexpensive option. Have fun with it!

Hello, my boyfriend and I just bought a new house. The outside is great but the inside is horrible. Actually, it really just needs new carpeting and a fresh coat of paint throughout (everything can be easily fixed!) but since we are making this house our own, I don't want just plain white walls in every room. My problem is, I have so many ideas for each room and none of them really coordinate! Plus, if they DO coordinate, I don't want everything to be too matchy-matchy. How can I create a good them for the whole house but still make each room unique? (link)
|
Decide what your focal point will be for each room and work off of that. My favorite theory is choose the thing you love the most. For example maybe you have a great piece of artwork or a really cool collection of something interesting that you want to showcase. Once you decide on your main focal point just make sure everything else compliments it but doesn't overpower it. You are right about the matchy-matchy thing. You are better off adding different textures than trying to get everything perfectly matched. For example I have a fur throw, a sisal rug and a rough wood coffee table. They don't really "match" but they compliment each other beautifully! My best advice is don't stress and whatever you do, have fun with it!

My kitchen sink is stopped up and the water is going from one side to the other. It took forever for the water to go down in both sides and everytime you put something in one side it goes to the other sink. The pipes are metal. We tried drano, it didn't work. How do I fix it without spending a lot of money?
(link)
|
I would try this first(it worked for me), dip all the water out of the sink(use a sponge to sop up the last of it) then pour a little Dawn dish detergent into both drains. Pour some boiling water into the sink(be careful when plunging that you don't burn yourself)then take a small plunger and just keep plunging one side and then the other. It took mine about 20 min.to break loose.Try putting the stopper in one side and plunging the other then reverse sides. If it doesn't work you will probably have to try one of the methods that the others suggested. Good luck!

my room bores me to death and i need some thing new that goes along with my personallity
basically im an emo girl so i like only black n neon colors (always have always will) so are there any ideas to make my room match me better i already have nice bright pink walls but wat could i do 2 decorate it?????? (link)

If you want to make your room more personal you could take some black and white photos of family , friends, pets, etc. and have them enlarged Put them in poster frames(you could use a black frame with a white mat and even have the people sign the mat (or your pet's footprint)and you will have your own meaningful artwork on display. Think outside the box. Maybe take photos of your friends from the knee down or just their hands or just their eyes(you see where I'm going with this)If you can't buy frames right now attach metal clips (like on a clipboard) to your wall to hold your artwork or photos. Even if you are not a good artist anyone can paint a word on a blank sheet. Imagine a large white poster board with one bold black word! You could also get your friends or family to dip their hands in black paint and make a hand print poster. Whatever you decide have fun with it!Good luck!

You know how there are sites that let you compare cars, and sites that let you compare electronics and everything else side by side? Is there some way to compare bedroom sets that different stores have for sale? Obviously we can't drag one to the other, so I was hoping for an on-line comparison kinda thingy? Anybody know? (link)
