Okay so i got my cartalage peirced and i got it on my right ear ( im a girl) . I heard that it has to be on a certain ear or soemthing. like Gay or lesbian for both genders. Im totally confused; does that go for gilrs or just guys?? (link)

In decades past, gays and lesbians were in a lot of danger from members of the public as well as the police. This made finding other people to date really difficult - emotionally and physically. The community developed a whole host of ways to tell other gay people that they were gay.
I think this is probably where the whole piercing on various sides thing to come from. It doesn't really carry any significance today - particularly as cartilage piercing was not around when these symbols were used!
