i went to school with this girl in elementary

I would say talk to her, be yourself, ask her 'you alright?' if you see her on her own, or maybe struggling, try to help her out. most girls like a guy not just for their looks, but also for their kind-hearted personality, and maybe a little bit of brain too.
but you dont need to be shy infront of her, she's only human. start with eye-contact, so before you do go up and talk to her, you know the signal is green and safe for you to go ahead.
