Q: I'm trying to decide what I'll study in university, and I'm considering engineering as an option. I know that you're an electrical engineer. Please tell me what you had to study in university and what your job is about.

Also, does it matter what subjects I do in high school? I'm in year 11 now and I do 3 unit (all other subjects are 2 unit) maths, chemistry, physics, biology, advanced English, and economics. I'll probably drop biology and pick up 4 unit maths in year 12. Do you think that these subjects are good ones if I want to study engineering in university?
Engineering is a great option! I absolutely love my job, and I loved college, too. I was in an electronics engineering technology program so we got to spend lots of time in labs building stuff, but if you're more theoretical and like math a lot more, you can do pure electrical engineering and have a good time with it. You get to work with the coolest people and read about really cutting edge stuff in engineering, and with an electrical degree there are a million different places you can go. I went into the aircraft industry but the possibilities are endless.

I'd say you're doing fine. High school doesn't matter all that much... I wasn't in a lot of the advanced classes, and I came out just fine. It's just important that you take a math class and a science class every year, and really take the time to understand things, don't just do what you need to in order to pass the test. You'll really regret not grasping those foundations if you slack off now.

Thanks for the advice! I think you're right that I'll regret it if I slack off now, because I used to slack when I was in year 8 and I really regret that now.

I've been in the advice column over five years now so I think I've pretty much heard it all... the love, the hate, the random insanity. I don't take it too seriously, so I'm not always giving the best advice, but my column is fun to read!

I am a 23 year old electrical engineer, a feminist, a Christian. I don't know everything but I can sure pretend to.

Disclaimer: Now that I'm on advicenators I'm getting even more questions every day. It's fast and easy for me to answer them, yes, so at least I'm answering something now, but if your question contains the words "there's this guy that I like..." chances are I won't get around to it. I'm only answering interesting questions that I haven't answered before. Register at the site and ask everyone for advice if you must have an answer, because if people read my column and boring love advice was all they found, they'd never come back.
