Q:
My boyfriend is in to drinking/smoking/drugs. He's not addicted to anything, but he does party a lot. I used to be wrapped up in all that crap. I was sober for a year before we started dating, but since we have been I have been drunk 4 times and high once. I am disgusted with myself for giving in to it (and it wasn't peer pressure btw, it was just me being weak.)My boyfriend is a great guy and I care a lot about him, but I am worried that if I stay in this relationship, it will be very hard for me to stay away from the drinking and smoking. I don't want to break up with him over something like this, but I just don't know if I can handle the temptation yet. Should I break up with him?
If this relationship is damaging to your mental/physical health along with your messing up your sobriety, then yes, you need to end the relationship. It is not healthy for you to be with a guy who is going to hinder your recovery. Plenty of people who have had substance abuse problems are naturally attracted to others who have the same problems, you need to find someone who is going to support you in being sober and who isn't into any substances himself. Do yourself a favor, and break up with this guy. I don't see you staying sober with a boyfriend who isn't going to do it with you.

Q: i am dating a guy who I have been with for a year. I like this girl who I have known for about 2 years. I like them both but for different reasons. He is sweet, funny, and I am so comfortable around him but sometimes I feel like something is missing. She is smart, I can talk to her for the longest time, and she always gives me butterflies. Is it just a crush and not worth losing him, or should I break up with him to see if its more than just a crush?
No one can make a personal decision like that for you. Give it more thought. If something feels like it's missing, talk about it and try to work through it. If that doesn't work, maybe you shouldn't be with him, but that doesn't mean you should be with her either. Do you know if she'd even be interested in anything but friendship with you if you were available? Would you regret ending the relationship you currently have?

Q: I'm 15 and I have very little confidence in myself. I've really matured a lot lately, at least enough to realize that I lack confidence. When I'm feeling good, I'm really good at making people laugh. Usually, especially at school, I feel awkward and I tend to be pretty quiet. I have trouble talking to most people. Maybe it's just a lack of experience w/ social stuff, but what do you think I should do?
I think you should almost force yourself to talk to more people. I know that seems scary but your lack of social interaction will eventually make it harder to pick up the necessary skills to really work well in social situations. So just get practicing by talking to people. Make new friends, arrange to hang out and have fun. Start trying to believe in yourself more, do things that make yourself feel good about yourself and build your confidence. You'll soon start seeing changes and then everything will become way more easier.

Q: Okay so about I year ago I started cutting, but stopped after a few months and haven't cut since. I started going to therapy, but stopped at the beginning of this year because they said I was fine. Truth is, I never told everything. I was okay for a little bit. But for a while I've been having a really hard time. I'm not sure I'd call it depression. I mean, sometimes I get really depressed and want to cut again, then for a little bit I'm fine, and then other times I get very very hyper. When I'm really hyper I get mad very easy at stupid things. I also get angry a lot. It seems like I keep having dramatic ups and downs....and really I'm not one to like drama. I don't know what to do though. I've tried talking to my friends and they don't know either. I don't feel like I can tell my parents because they'll make me feel guilty about it like I hurt them somehow, plus they don't have a lot of money to get me help again. I just want to know whats wrong with me and how to get rid of it. Help please?
It sounds like bipolar disorder. That's a problem where someone alternates between periods of mania and depression. Your parents may be upset that you weren't forthcoming, but you need to realize that their priority, regardless of initial reaction, will be to help you. They've already proven that by sending you to a therapist before. Bipolar disorder is treated with medication very well. Even if that's not it, it's far better to see the psychologist again than to try to handle it on your own.

Q: Today, my friend and I did something that was bad, we put spray paint and ketchup in a baseball hardhat that belongs to someone that we know. He is sort-of our friend. However, the garage that we did it in belongs to our friends little brother. And he was out roller-blading with us in their driveway. The garage smelled like paint after we finished, so one of my friends who didn't have anything to do with what we did said that I farted in there, so it smelled like paint. The father of the little brother then came out, and went into the garage. He said it smelled like paint and started to yell at the little brother demanding what he did. My friend and I ran away, but I feel really bad, and I hink she does 2. What should I do??
you should really tell the truth, instead of hiding it and lying.

Q: My bestfriend talks behind my back, what should i do ??
Ask her if she's mad at you. If she says no, than tell her nicely that you've heard differently. Let her know you just want the truth. If she's upset with you, you've got to know so you can try to work it out. If she's just gossiping, you may want
to think twice before confiding in her.

Q: My friend said if I ever had a problem with her, i should say so, But when i do she tells me to butt out of her business. Should i keep trying to get this through to her?
Sometimes people feel attacked when friends flat out tell them they're doing something wrong. Try talking to her again, but this time tell her what's on your mind really calmly. She might realize that you're trying to help her out, not dump on her, If she still resists, you'll have to decide whether you can
keep up with your friendship if she never changes what's bugging you.

Q: My friend always brings her boyfriend along when we hang out, what can i do ?
If you tell her that it's annoying, for her boyfriend to be around all the time, she might resent it. So, why not plan some girl's nights? That way, you'd get to hang out with just her, but you wouldn't have to bring Mr.Clingy into it. Better still, once you have a girl's night, she may remember how fun it is to be with just you.

Q: This girl at school is so mean to me, always saying what i talk about is so stupid. What can i do ?
A guy used to do the same thing to me. At first, I tried being mean back. That didn't get him to stop. I tried being nice next time, but that made him
target me more. Finally, my friend reminded me that people hate to be ignored. So anytime this guy said "shut up" or something, I pretended I didn't hear him and continued my story. I didn't stop to his level, and he started to feel like it wasn't fun to pick on me anymore. I bet it'll work
for you too !!

Q: My friend flirts with the guy i like. i told her that i didn't appreciate it, but she didn't seem to care, what do i do?
Ask her which is more important to her, guys or friendship. If she says friendship, than let her know she should cut it out. If she says guys, then she isn't much of a friend.

Q: My friend and I are supposed to take a weeklong road trip together, Which we oranized a few months ago. But she has been annoying me lately and i haven't enjoyed hanging with her. is it okay for me to back out ?
No, it's not okay. You have to honor this vacation or she's going to feel like total crap. Take her aside and ask her if she still wants to go. Maybe she'll say no, she might not be so psyched about the idea of traveling with you now, either. If she's still into it, suggest going on a shorter trip or taking someone else with you to dilute your quality time. You never know, you might end up having
alot of fun. And in the future, you should really think things through before making extensive travel plans with friends.

Q: My mother tries to get me to dump all of my boyfriends. She says none of them are good enough for me. What should i do ?
Let her know that you have high standards, and that you're careful and have no intention of getting into bad situations. tell her that when she says these mean things, it makes you feel like she doesn't trust your judgment and that hurts. Hopefully she'll back off once she sees where you're coming from.

Q: My friend likes a greay guy, and he likes her back, the problem is he's a pot dealer. Am i crazy for trying to stop thing ?
Nope, his criminal behavior equals bad news. What more, since you think he's cool, you'll probably want to hang out with them yourself. Even if neither you nor your friend smokes pot, being friends with him might make other people stop trusting you and her. If he's in your car and say the police find drugs on him, you could get in trouble. Talk to her about your doubts, but remember you can't make her not date him. You can choose not be spend time with
them though. Just tell her how you feel, so she knows why you're bailing.

Q: Whenever i go to my friend's house, her father smacks my butt if she isn't around. It makes me so uncomfortable. I started avoiding going over there,
but i can't stay away forever. Help Me !!
Even if this man doesn't really "mean anything" when he touches you, what he doing is wrong. You have to handle the situation immediately. It'll probably be incredibly scary and difficult, but next time he tries to do this to you, push him away and say "don't ever do that again, i don't like it." Let him know that if he doesn't cut it out, you're going to tell your parents or the police. That should work, if your friend have noticed that you're acting weird, you might have to explain. Otherwise, bringing it up with her may not be such a good idea, going there could cause alot of unnecessary trouble between her and her dad.

Q: I have these blemishes on my upper arms that look like acne. They're so bad I can't even wear short-sleeve shirts. What are they, and how do I lose them?
It sounds like you have an extremely common condition called keratosis pilaris. Your dead skin isn't shedding properly, which causes hair follicles to get clogged. You may have noticed similar spots on your butt and thighs. Actually, you were born with this pesky problem—it runs in families. It also tends to occur more often in people who are overweight. To get rid of the bumps, try putting on an alpha hydroxy lotion, such as Eucerin Plus, twice a day. Also, use an exfoliating shower mitt or scrub (gently!) in the shower two or three times a week. Whatever you do, definitely don't pick at them—that'll just make the spots look worse. And remember to wear sunscreen, because alpha hydroxy makes your skin more sensitive.

Q: I usually discharge white stuff one to two weeks before my period. Is this normal?
Yep! Totally normal. All women have vaginal discharge, and many notice that they have more about mid-way through their period cycle. Healthy, normal discharge is usually clear or whitish, (though it could look a little yellowish when dried on your underwear) just like what you're talking about. It's nothing to be concerned about at all. In fact, it means your body is doing what it needs to cleanse itself and stay healthy. However, if you suddenly were to notice that your discharge was lumpy and thick (kind of like cottage cheese), or that you had a lot more than you usually do (and that is even factoring in the fluctuations that happen over the course of the month), you experience itching or burning, or your discharge takes on a foul and unusual odor, then you could have an irritation of some sort. In that case, talk to your doctor about it, and let them check you out.

Q: About 17 days ago I had sex. The lower part of my stomach has been hurting ever since. I have a burning sensation when I need to pee, which is often. Could I be pregnant?
I can't say whether you're pregnant because I'm not, alas, all knowing. Take a pregnancy test if you're worried. But it sounds like you have a urinary tract infection. A UTI can be caused by the irritation from having sex (especially if you don't have it often or are not very well lubricated). An infection can also occur when fecal bacteria gets in the urethra. (Always wipe front to back Don't just take over-the-counter medications, because they only relieve symptoms-they're not a cure. If the problem hasn't gone away within 24 hours, go to a doctor. She'll take a urine sample to determine whether you have a UTI, and prescribe antibiotics if you do. Avoid UTIs by peeing before and after sex, and by drinking unsweetened cranberry juice. Both help eliminate bacteria from your bladder.

Q: I have these weird clots and dark spots in my period. I am worried that these may be a sign of cancer. What are these and are they normal?
Having clots or thickness during your period isn't necessarily something to be concerned about. Sometimes your periods can be thick, and they may even appear clotted. It's not just blood that you're shedding, but small portions of tissue — your endometrium, or the lining or your uterus — as well. Thicker periods are a normal variation, depending on the day and the heaviness of your flow. However, if your period has changed in some way recently, you should talk to your doctor. Also, if there's any chance you could have become pregnant, you should get checked out as well, as it's possible to become pregnant and then have a (very early) miscarriage without even realizing it. For anyone who's sexually active, it is important to have a yearly pap smear and examination by your gynecologist. This is both a way to make sure you're sexually healthy, and an excellent way to detect any problems early on.

Q: How do I know if I have a yeast infection? I have this weird discharge, but it doesn't itch. I am worried.
Everyone has some discharge from their vagina; the amount varies depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle. Healthy, normal discharge is clear or somewhat milky, usually odorless, and it appears a bit yellowish when it dries. But when you have a yeast infection, your discharge becomes thick and white; it may look like cottage cheese and have a yeasty smell, and you could feel some itching, burning, or irritation in the vagina and vulva. Yeast infections are a very common type of vaginal infection and can be quite uncomfortable, but they are not serious, and are easy to treat once you've been diagnosed. However, it's important to see a doctor to get checked out if you feel you're experiencing something different from your normal discharge, even if it seems like a yeast infection. There are other, more serious types of infections (like some STDs) that can cause symptoms similar to those of a yeast infection, but can actually become worse if treated with yeast-infection medication.

Q: I recently heard that a guy I made out with might have mono. How can I tell if I have it?
Infectious mononucleosis, better known as mono, is usually transmitted through saliva and mucus, so your liplock with this guy puts you at risk. Don't expect to feel sick immediately, as symptoms don't appear for two to six weeks after contact.
However, if you begin to feel fatigued, have a sore throat, break out in a rash, lose your appetite, or have a fever, make a visit to your doctor and get a test done to see if you have mono. Despite its "kissing disease" nickname, you can catch mono just by drinking out of someone's glass, so even single gals should be aware!
