So, my computer got a huuuge virus. It infected our entire registry and eventually erased the hard drive and I lost all my files. This is the third time it's happened to me. I was actually in the middle of backing up my files, so don't tell me to do that. I can re-import all the music I had (I have most of the CDs and I'll borrow the rest from friends) and all I lost were all my saved AIM chats.
The comouter guy said AIM lets in certain viruses, but I really doubt that being signed on for about three hours a day allowed someone to hack my computer to the point of having NO hard drive left whatsoever. I know you can get those "annoyance" viruses that send messages to your whole buddy list, but nothing this serious
My dad continues to blame me for all these problems, and I'll admit that it's partially my fault (www.lyricsspot.com got hacked or whatever, and I got a Trojan from it, but I erased it compeltely before it infected the computer). However, he's left his email open, and I've seen his internet history. He goes on dating sites, "friend" sites, et cetera. I know he's not getting these by accident because he even has an account. I've gotten popups from the same site, and it's not the kind of thing I should be seeing, put it that way. I'm pretty sure we got the virus that destroyed our computer (for the THIRD TIME!!!) from one of these sites.
So I guess this is sort of a two-part question- what virus was this and HOW DID IT GET IN??? we have firewalls, I do three virus scans twice a day, and the worst site I go on is myspace!! Also, is there a way to approach my dad about this without him accusing me of spying on him?

Well, first off, how do you know that your data is 'destroyed', what caused you to believe that you had a virus? What was it that happened? You failed to tell us what virus scanner you were using. You also need to be running anti-spyware of some sort. I recommend the free and powerful 'spybot search and destroy' (links at the bottom). As for your lost data, it's most likely not due to a virus. Viruses aren't usually written to 'destroy your HD'. You said you were backing up your data, how were you doing this?
Do you use Internet Explorer? Run firefox, some people will argue against this, but I like it, so run it... Next, what is it that you download? Is your version of XP up to date? Auto-update?
I need more information before I can assess the situation...

i have an acer laptop, and it's hooked up onto the charger and everything, but my computer says its running on the battery. This is bad because 1. i checked everything and it's all connect right, and 2. my computer only has about a half hour of battery life

A lot of laptops will show the battery when in fact they're running off of AC. This is to indicate that the batter is being charged while you use the laptop.

I was playing Settlers IV when I heard a loud bang, I wasn't sure where the noise came from so I continued to play the game. The music stopped but all other sounds could still be heard. When I finished playing I tried to take the disc out but the drawer would not open. We managed eventually to open it with a carefully placed paper clip. The disc had exploded inside the disc drive. Pieces everywhere! My husband had to take out the whole disc drive to retrieve the pieces. Does anyone know a way I can continue to play this game without having to buy another one, and are exploding discs a common problem? I had never heard of this before.

No, exploding CD's are not a common problem, but they do happen. Usually to force a CD to explode you've got to have at least a > 40x CD-ROM drive. That's nearly 9000 RPM and will cause even a slightly damaged CD to explode. You could try contacting the company and let them know what happened, see if they'll sympathize with you, otherwise try a bittorrent site, if you use your product key that you purchased you should be fine.

so, i've downloaded photofiltre and adobe imageready cs2 because i wanna make a defualt profile picture for myspace like the ones layout makers have. you know, with designs and stuff. but the thing is, i don't know HOW to make them. like, for the layouts makers, they have cool designs [[stars, lines, etc.]]. i'm new with HTMLs and stuff like that. i would really like it if somebody would tell me ways to make a cool design with a picture of me in it. so if anybody can help me with this, i would really appreciate it! Which is better and easier to use: Windows Movie Maker or Adobe(I forgot what's the specific name of the program, though)?

Ease of use and quality are often unfortunatly inversely proportional.
Adobe premier pro and after effects, while being significantly more complex then windows move maker, offer a far superior set of effects, styles, and all around quality of the final product. Many tutorials do exist to help in the learning process.
If all you want is played out static intros and rising or falling text, go with movie maker. Premier pro has a relatively simple interface for trimming, cutting, and moving clips and parts of clips around. Overlaying audio, moving clip audio, music etc. is pretty simple. They are expensive, but I believe they offer month long trials, or something to that extent.
After effects allows you to work in 3d with your clip, allowing you to really have some fun, but be wary, it will grab and tight to your systems resources and always beg for more. Make sure you've at least got a 2.6GHZ machine, at least 512MB of ram, and some space to store the final renders.

Not too sure about your application seeing as it's definitely not the mainstream photoshop type. I'd recommend using a free alternative such as The GIMP, it's popular, with a lot of tutorials.

Like the other person said, you can download it from bittorrent or some other p2p network. If you want a free alternative, try 'the gimp'. Do a google search of you need to find it.

Does anyone know any dsl,high speed internets for affordable prices. I need something that I could talk on the phone and be able to be online. I was thinking about getting sbc/at&t but I want to pay something under 30$. I use to have Netzero but it was way too slow.

You could get a wireless card and an antenna and steal your neighbors wireless. If you don't want to do that, do a local search for DSL promos, cable will always cost more then that, unless there's a 'month-wise trial period', you'll end up at about 40$ eventually.

Not sure what you mean, but if somebody links you to an image of theres that's hosted by photobucket, you can edit the URL to drop you into the account.
EX: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/familyguy3/Irssishot.png
Simply edit out the image name which will go back to the last forward slash, and you'll get back to the file view.

Fixing a dvd burner without prior knowledge on the inner workings of one isn't smart. There's not much danger, but the chance of actually fixing it for less then it costs to simply buy a new one are slim. I hate to give bad news such as this, but it's true.

I want to check my friends AIM because I want to see if she's friends with someone I don't like. [ she won't tell me if she is or not ] and I know her password, and I just want to log on really quick, and then sign off and not go on it anymore. And I know her password and everything, I'm just afraid that if I go on it, someone'll IM me and I'll have to talk to them and they'll mention it to her and she'll find out and get mad. Is there anyway I can do it without her knowing? Like, is there a way I can sign onto her name while she's online? Or will AIM like, send her a notice or something that's she on at 2 places at once. Hey I got a 4X cd/dvd burner combo thing and its acting up. it usualy burns cds but when i try to burn anything on a dvd it sez "power calibration error" and wen i tried to move some files from a data dvd onto my hard drive it sed "buffer something" like uh...it couldnt buffer...anyone know if this is fixable or am i fucked? A little googling leads me to believe that power calibration errors are usually doe to cheap cd/dvds. Try it with different media and see what happens. Get back to me if that doesn't work.

ok yesterday me speekers worked but at like 1 in the morning they just stopped working.....i was on my limewire and myspace at the time and a song ended but it didnt get another song started like usuall.......i plugged in my other speekers but it still didnt work....is my comp. messed up or what....please help.thanxz

System specs? OS? Well, i'll assume you're on windows xp, first of all, do some basic troubleshooting. Unplug the speakers, plug them in again and start a song, check the master volume level. Open your volume controls window and make sure nothing is muted or too low. Next, you may want to make sure that they're plugged into a power source, then try swapping them out with other speakers to see if it's the hardware.

im 16/f going into the 11th grade this year. now of course, all the teachers are going to say "get ideas on what college you want to go to & what you want your career to be" but really, i don't know what i should do. since i only have 2 more years of hs left & take the SATS this year, i really want to have an idea of what i should be doing. i know what most of you are probably thinking. most kids decide a few years into college, but i really don't think i should do that. most of the time, i thought i would become a nurse. most people say 'thats what i should do' because im good with people & i dont get grossed out easily. ive watched surgerys before in the OR & i find it intersting. on the other hand, i really like computers. im good with HTML & web design & i also can fix them. i go over to my grandparents house a lot & always seem to fix things & hook it up for them. this doesn't seem like a job to me, this seems like fun. basically what im asking is, what do you guys think about my situation & if i do decide to go to college for computers, what good colleges can i go to in the PA, NY, NJ area & what are jobs i can do??

A career is computers is sort of vague, you could go to school to be a programmer (I wouldn't recommend it) or, as in my case, for a degree in computer science/engineering. I'd suggest you get some ideas for careers that involve computers and order a few books on the subject, get an idea of what they consist of so you can make an educated decision. the issue you have and that person that answered before didn't address, is that you want a ROCKET, not a fountain. In this case you could try two things, one, drop a few mentos in and attempt to screw the lid back on and throw it before it explodes from the extreme pressure of the CO2 separating from the water, or loosly sit it between two adjustable concave plates held up by rods. drop the mentos in screw the lid on and twist the plates so that the bottle neck is pointing downward, i'll work itself out.

I assume you're asking for a program that converts the filetype rather than for actual editing seeing as your question didn't mention editing at all other the it being a characteristic of the specific application that you think you need. Well, it depends on what filetype you want to make it, once you know that, go to google and use the search string 'current-filetype to preferred-filetype converter'
EX: If I had an .avi file that I wanted to convert to an mpeg...
