I'm locked out of my computer. What should I do?

Question Posted Friday February 24 2017, 5:05 pm

I was on my pc this morning when a porno page popped up and a prompt saying I need to call a number and pay $100. I didn't pay it and all the advice on the Internet didn't help. Is there a cd/dvd virus removal I can buy?

Hi there,

You may not need to go that far. It is possible that a web page you visited is corrupted, and has taken over your browser.

There may not be anything actually ON your computer, unless you clicked and said it was ok to install new software about the time this showed up.

Here is your first step: Press ctrl-alt-delete at the same time, and open task manager. Your should see your web browser in the list of tasks.

Select the web browser, and then click End Task.

Restart your browser, and when it comes up and asks you if you want to restore your previous session... SAY NO!

If you have your browser set to open the tabs and windows you had open before you closed it, things get more complicated.

In most cases lately, what I described should be all you need.

No matter WHAT... Do NOT ever... EVER call those numbers or pay them anything. It is a scam 100% of the time.

Please let me know in feedback, how you make out.

Also, when you are done, please install the free version of MalwareBytes, or SuperAntiSpyware and run a complete scan of your computer to remove anything else that may be hanging around.

All the best,

DN.
