Is the recent economic recession causing anyone high stress?

Question Posted Thursday February 19 2009, 12:11 am

In more recent times, the business that I have been working for has been firing employees every day, because sales and new contracts have been low and they can't afford to keep them around.

Unfortunately, because they don't want their unemployment payments to go up, they've been firing people over the smallest of reasons.

Now they're going after my job, for NO reason. I have no written warnings, never had any workplace performance problems, and up until now was actually rewarded for my skill at what I do.

So... I'm in trouble. I might be getting fired, for reasons that are complete lies.

What should I do? And after I'm fired, then what should I do next?

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Fired or laid off? If you have no written warnings, it would be hard to justify firing you. Lay offs, on the other hand, are happening now because of the economy.

Get your resume together now and start your job search. If you get laid off, you'll be ahead of the game. Being pro-active is the best defense against anxiety.

If you do get laid off, ask your boss if he will write you a letter of recommendation. Stay on good terms with this company and do not leave with an attitude. Be polite and professional, otherwise, you won't get your letter of recommendation and will not be able to use them as a reference. You may even tell them you've really enjoyed working with them and if ever things turn around in the future, they should feel free to call you.

I'll tell you why I say this...my husband was fired from a company because of company politics. He left there with a very good attitude and guess what? A month later they hired him back as a consultant and doubled his pay. As it turned out, they couldn't function without him.

So, never burn your bridges. You don't know what will come out of all this.

My dad's company fired 75% of its employees, but at least they got "repayment" money. My dad was one of the last several to stay behind and when the company closed, my dad didn't get a single penny.

Instead of focusing on the now, focus on the later. Start building a resume and post it up and send it to whatever company you can, even if it requires you to move. That's the best advice...
