on my mac it doesnt let me change my backround (wallpaper)!

and error comes up every time.

what do i do? (link)
It could be a few things.
I need more information. The OS version (10.3x [Panther], 10.4 [Tiger], 10.5 [Leopard]) you are running, and what the error says.

In Mac OS the "wallpaper" is called the desktop.

Generally though, you open system preferences (in the dropdown munu from the blue apple in the upper left corner of the screen), then select "desktop & screen saver".

Next Select "desktop" and you should see a list of Apple preinstalled ones: "Apple images", "nature", "plants" and others etc,.
When you select any of the stock options "Apple Images" for instance, a set of mini "thumbnail" pics of the selections that came with the Operating System (the OS) should appear to the right as a set of mini pics.

First try clicking one of the preinstalled selections. Click on any of the "mini pics" of other backgrounds or wallpapers (sounds like you may have come from the PC world. wallpaper is generally a Windows term.)

When you click on the different pictures (digital artwork & pictures) you should immediately see the desktop change. If you've done that already and THAT'S when you get the error, then there may be a corrupted preference file for the desktop images, or other OS problem. Let's assume the simpler one first....

The preference file for the desktop pictures is here:
username/library/preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

there are TWO libraries: one for the the entire hard disk and one for each user, so if there are two users each can have their own desktop picture.

First try as described above to simply CHANGE the desktop. If you get the error & can't do this at all, first try deleting the preference file above.
Preferences can get corrupted easily. DON'T empty the trash. The preference file will regenerate itself either immediately, or if you log out and log back in again.

If that doesn't solve the problem, you may have more general disk corruption. If you have any utilities such as Tech tool, or disk warrior, use them. You eventually NEED to have one or the other, preferably both.. they are the saviors of the Mac OS, as Norton etc is to Windows.

If what you were trying to do was use a picture you already have, the problem may be in the size or location of the picture.
When in the system preferences app you should see in the list "pictures folder", and "Choose Folder" as options.
Try selecting one of these.
If you have any pictures in your picture folder, located at username/pictures, try choosing any of them to see if you can change the picture at all.

BTW, that's what we're try to do here, find out if it's the actual picture you're trying to use that's causing the error, or if there's an error in the system....

Drag or copy the picture you want to use into the
pictures folder (easiest), then quit, and then reopen the desktop selector app we're working with.
You should see a thumbnail of the picture when you select pictures. If you put the pic in a folder you need to select "choose folder". You navigate to the folder you want and select the picture.
This is all assuming you originally can see what you should as described above when you open the system preferences app.

If you CAN'T change the pic to even the stock apple selections then most probably there is disk corruption and you'll need to repair your disk.

Lastly, if you have ANY pictures in iphoto, you should see "library" as a choice below a gray line under the list of standard desktop picture options.
Try selecting ANYTHING from iphoto.
If you can, it may be a problem with the picture you're trying to use: wrong format or too small are the most common problems, though the Mac is the most image friendly computer in the world.
But if you're trying to use a picture that's teeny or a strange size (your monitor size also effects what the desktop pic will look like, though the dropdown menu right in the desktop picture selection screen allows you to:
 fill creen
 stretch to fill screen
 center
 tile

But if you can't do ANY selecting, even of the stock apple choices then something's corrupted in either the preferences or the system preferences (how to fix above), the application itself, or the entire disk.
Open the "Disk utility" app.
If you have no other disk to boot from and repair Select "verify disk". It will at least tell you if that app finds general corruption.

Lastly select "repair disk permissions".. especially in OS 3.9 these we constantly getting corrupted and needed repair.
Let me know....

i was just wondering how you got your songs from limewire to go onto itunes because i have no clue how. and also how do you get songs from limewire to a cd? or do u have to import them to itunes also?
k? thnx
:] (link)
This is all assuming what you downloaded is NOT Digital Media Right (DMR) protected. If it is, itunes will NOT import it. This applies to wma as well as any tunes originally bought from an itunes store or other store that only sells DMA protected audio. There is no way to tell until you start to download the file as far as I know.

TIP!!
After, or AS YOU ARE DOWNLOADING IT, You CAN tell by trying to play the song first in the Limewire player, even if it's only 1/4 downloaded. (in Mac it's double click the song). If it plays you're good to go. If the limewire player doesn't play it, and your computer tries to open some other player with error message, it's copy protected.
If you DO get an error message (usually it says "the license is inconsistent, or there is no encoder blah blah") move on.
So look for .mp3 or .m4a files if you can.

WHY PEOPLE SHARE COPY PROTECTED SONGS IS BEYOND ME, but maybe there are cracks or ways around it. I don't know of any....

If it's NOT protected, itunes will convert the wma file automatically while importing. I'm told this can take a bit of time and there are free utilities out there that will do the conversion for you much faster.
That said:
Basically, all you need to do is this.. meaning the easiest way!!!... ;)

1. open itunes- drag the itunes window slightly to right so you can still see half of the full list window.
2. locate the folder where you have the tunes you want to import.

YOUR Options:
a. import and entire folder of tunes: (drag the folder into the itunes window and let go. I tunes will import all of the tunes automatically.

b. Open the folder with the tunes in it's own window, and drag that slight to the left, same as you did with the itunes window. I have a Mac, but however you do it, select all of the tunes you want to import. On a Mac, the simplest way is to press the apple key and while holding hit the letter "a" (you just selected "all files").
You should see all the tunes in the folder highlighted.

4. drag all the highlighted tunes over to the itunes window and let go of the mouse.
I tunes will import all of the tunes automatically.
On windows, select either all of the tunes or separately select the ones you want to import.

But regardless, YOU CAN DRAG A SINGLE TUNE OR 50. Even if you're not sure if you already imported it, it doesn't matter. That's why I always select "all".
IMPORTANT!
For your own file purposes, place the songs in band folders FIRST before importing. If not and they're loose, if you ever change the location (such as putting all Green Day songs in new folder you name "Green day".. I tunes will lose track of where the songs is, and won't play it when you click it.
So do ALL your arranging first.
If you want to let itunes do ALL your organizing for you, in itunes preferences "advanced" click "copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library". Then after you import them you can delete them from your downloads folder.
itunes will not duplicate imported songs even if you changed the name of the file AFTER you import the song. As long as it's in the same place as when you imported it, itunes will find it (assuming you DID NOT choose to have itunes organize and store the music in it's Ginormous itunes music folder.

Example: If you downloaded a song file named "01-Sally-Sue.mpg", and you did as I do.. removed the "01" so the song file is now called The REALLY Good Band-Sally-Sue.mpg in your files and won't show up at the top of the list (standard file sorting always puts numbers before letters in a list view of a folder).

In that case just do all your renaming first (there are free utilities that can bulk rename files). I use one where I can select "remove the first two characters etc. it can be set that way.

After you've renamed them to your liking with or without the band name first (many tunes on Limewire are listed without correct band names AND the ID3 tag info DOESN'T have the correct band name. Then, if you click on the bar that says "album artist" or "Artist" to see all tunes by that band you get a useless list.

I personally like to use band names in ID3 tags, since I can still use the search window to look for a song title, but in the full itunes song name list, all the bands/artists WILL be together... But that's totally just my preference.

SO many tunes on Limewire are incorrectly tagged as to the artist. ANYBODY who vaguely sounds like Billy Joel is listed as the artist. John Cougar, Harry Chapin (The Cats' in the Cradle, Taxi etc) and many others are tagged as Billy Joel, so importing them without the corrections gives you not only a bad itunes list...
But also you are virally propagating the wrong performers as others upload tunes that you share!!!
btw, YOU SHOULD SHARE.. GOOD KARMA...

Burning a CD. Itunes can do it. You CAN'T burn single songs in itunes. YOU CAN ONLY BURN A PLAYLIST!

So make a playlist of the tunes you want and you'll magically see the "burn disc" button appear in the lower right corner of itunes.

Drag the tunes into the order you want them to play in on the CD and then, click "Burn Disc"

Remember to make sure you have a CD player that can play MP3 songs. If your main CD player can't play mp3 Discs then you need a utility to convert the tunes to "aiff format" (standard CD format). Also free converters are around.

The other option is to use limewire to download Toast, (or just buy it), a really great CD/DVD burner program with many more options than itunes has. If you can get a copy, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT
ITUNES IS NOT A VERY GOOD BURNER PROGRAM.

In Toast's window, you first select audio CD or MP3 disc, depending on what you want. Then you CAN drag single songs right from the folder and arrange them in the order you want. As you add songs Toast automatically shows you how much space on a standard CD you've used, so you know how many more songs you can add. Add as many or few a you want.
The simple way then is to press the red button "record disc" and the CD/dvd try will open asking you for a blank disk.

Toast burns faster and better than itunes.
If, like me you want to burn multiple copies for friends, toast allows you to save time by using something called "Save as Disc Image"

Basically, it will save the thing as a "Toast CD file", so next time you want to burn another copy. you just double click the CD image and you're ready to burn!!
Makes life simpler, unless you're just burning one mix for the night and that's it.

Can you smoke weed and still be a good singer? Someone told me that it makes your lungs stronger- because it makes you build up something or whatever- dont know how true that is.please don't lecture me about not smoking weed, thanks. (link)

OK, I'm going to give you an answer from experience as a voice teacher (27 years), a writer, and a singer... that's me.
The short answer is...
There is no short answer.

Over 25 years I've discovered that the human voice is like a fingerprint... no two are the same. I've taught chain smokers who defied every rule I thought I knew of.

I do know where the breathing thing came from... I stumbled on it myself years ago. It's the thing people do when they take a puff and then pull in an "extra bit of breath" to get the smoke as deep as they can. Holding the breath, NOT with your throat closed, but by using your diaphragm, you strengthen that muscle. I converted this into actual breathing exercises, without the smoke, actually. This form of slow intake.. hold with mouth and throat open, then pull a bit, pull a bit, pull a bit more air will increase your lung capacity as well as strengthen the muscle that controls breathing.

You are the only one that can determine what MJ does or does not do to your voice. As a rule (and I hate rules) the professional singer mentioned above is the most nearly correct. The hot air crossing over your vocal chords is by far the most irritating and potentially voice damaging thing about smoking. But there are ways around that too. Water pipes for one. And especially the newer vaporizers will deal with the heat and the smoke to a good extent.. BUT!
If your vocal chords are sensitive, almost anything foreign may irritate them.

MJ opened up my writing when I was younger, and I'm better for it. I came from such a screwed up, uptight background.. being screamed at daily, I'd NEVER ever have written a word had I not read some Carlos Casteneda books about the proper use of "power plants", and how not to abuse them.
In moderation for me, the upside is greater than the downside. HOWEVER, when I'm performing or in the studio, it's no smoke for two weeks prior.. and if you can't do that, well then that's it's own problem.. know what I mean?

So really, lectures and good intentions aside, YOU will be the best judge. Experiment as a scientist would... Try partaking a certain amount for 2 weeks, & record yourself. Then stop for two weeks and record yourself. You'll see how your voice responds.

Some people, (I used to use the example of Bruce Springsteen back in the day) have what I call "leather vocal chords". Bruce would do 4 hour shows for months on end, year after year.. no vocal training, nothing. He never lost his voice for any concert I ever saw in the 70's, 80' 90's.
Students would come in and ask "Can you teach me how to sing like him?" .. Answer... I can't. He's a genetic freak of nature... a good one. I'm not so lucky. Smoke filled clubs bother my voice terribly, they always did, WAY more than my own personal casual & careful MJ use.

But I never preach one size fits all.
The choice comes down to a basic cost/benefit analysis.
In the end smoke is smoke. Your throat and all the vocal piping before the lungs are lined with tiny hairs called cilia. They are designed to recognize things like smoke & make you cough. That's what I'm sure you've seen when people are passing around a joint. If you smoke ANYTHING regularly, these cilia kinda sorta burn away & become desensitized. That's why when someone quits cigarettes you often see them coughing uncontrollably for weeks. The cilia are growing back. But that's chronic daily usage. If one uses a water pipe etc or even smokes maybe half a MJ "ciggie" once a day, this will probably not happen.

The tar thing while technically true is well, not technically true. No one has done good multiple, unbiased controlled studies of MJ users, heck they can't even agree about cigarette smokers, because even cigarette smokers can't be categorized by a controlled lab study.. people act completely differently in their day to day life: some barely puff, some inhale deeply and hold, some inhale and immediately exhale etc... and they do it differnetly from the lab to the real world, and from month to month. Cigarettes also vary wildly in tar and nicotine content.... same as MJ does. "North California death weed" is going to be 10 times more irritating than "regular". It's like trying to quantify caffeine in coffee.. how strong is the oil?... how fine is the grind?... how long does it percolate?... yadah yadah.

THE KEY:
"Know thyself"... or or at least start getting to.
"Everything in moderation" and...
Listen to your body.

You'll find the balance that's right for you, as opposed to me or the next person.
Lastly, Drink TONS of good clear water every day.
3 quarts MINIMUM for men, and close to that for women. More if you sweat a lot. I drink a gallon a day.... yup.
UNKNOWINGLY DEHYDRATED STUDENTS account for far more vocal problems (from dry mucus membranes... death to a singer), than a few cigarettes, even a bit of MJ. Just listen to your body. ;-)
