thepetmom is mostly correct and still a little vague. (no offense, thepetmom.)
she's right about the rasp. i also use really rough sand paper.
i find that nectarine pits work better. make sure that its shaped right. it should be solid. no splits in the seam. it shouldn't be shaped like a mitten and you want it to be fairly large so pick a large nectarine. if its not large enough or shaped weird. throw it out and start again. it will probably take you a few tries to perfect making these rings but its well worth it.
it sounds like a waste, but you want the fruit to be really ripe or rotten. this usually gives the pit a beautiful brown color. and, the flesh comes away from the pit alot easier.
i let the pit dry for 2 to 3 months rather than 1-3 days. this will make the pit alot stronger and it will unfortuanately take alot longer to file down. but, if you want a ring that will last, its worth it.
when grinding the pit down be careful to grind both sides evenly. don't grind it too thin or it will be weak. basically, when you see that the hollow part is starting to break through you should stop grinding. get a sharp pocket knife (or the like.) start carving the middle out so that its smooth. keep carving until it fits your desired finger or the finger of the one you desire.
