I've been thinking about getting a pet — something extremely low maintenance. Already dead would be ideal. Where should I look? (link)

low maintenance.. a fish, all you have to do is sprinkle some food in the bowl once a day, and if you have a filter then you really really can wait a while before you need to clean it.
with hamsters you only need to feed them about once or twice a week. and you don't need to change the cage very often, until it looks/smells really badly or until grass starts growing in there. (hamster food consists of seeds) but for them you really do need to play with them often so they become friendly.
