advice

I want to lose weight before summer. How do I do this easily?

1) Workout -- do cardio 30-40 mins a day, 5-6 days a week.
2) Eat right -- focus on eating as much fruits and vegetables as you can. Look up Freeleethebananagirl on youtube, she is a vegan who eats about 5,000 calories a day but is TINY. Her videos are entertaining and she is amazing. If you are eating the right things, you don't need to restrict your calories

Hi.. I'm 12 years old, female.

So yesterday, I got done eating and I asked my OWN dad for some gum. Then, he said "It's all 'candy candy candy gum gum gum' with you. " That's when I just wanted to cry.

And that's not all. Kids at school call me names too. I told them and all they did was tell them to stop - they didn't!! I told them again and they said "Well they should express their facts and opinions". I told my mom and she didn't care. They can't move me to another school.

I've been counting my calories for over a year now. On the app I had, I set it for 1200 calories I eat.. I may drop it down to just 1000.

My calves are fat, my chin is fat, my butt is fat, my stomach is fat (I seriously have to suck it in), my cheeks are fat.. Pretty much it. I hate my body and I want to go anorexic. Yeah, yeah anorexia is bad for your body but it will be better for me! I'm thinking about starving myself..

Listen if you start restricting your calories when your this young, you won't grow/develop through puberty well. This means when you're 19/20 years old, you will have serious METABOLIC ISSUES and you will NOT have the body of a victoria's secret angel. If you don't eat enough you will NOT DEVELOP PROPERLY!!! Simple as that.

If you think you are fat, I would suggest adding about 200 calories to your diet AND going for a ONE HOUR JOG. Dieting won't give you lean, sexy muscles, only exercise will. If you think your stomach is fat look up "8 mins abs" on youtube.

You are young so you should NOT be restricting your diet. I am 20 years old and very fit and dieted a bit in high school. It wasn't good and I found doing cardio is the best way to get a slim sexy body (in addition to a very balanced diet...if you wanna know about dieting successfully, drop one in my inbox). I hope you take my advice and start eating healthy and exercising instead of starving yourself. I am a pre-medical colleges student majoring in Nutrition and hope you make some healthier choices.

Goodluck. Let me know what goes down.

I plan on working out twice a day, drinking water and eating 1200-1500 calories. Is this possible?

Yes it is possible to lose 35 pounds by January, but I suggest eating AT LEAST 1500 calories. If you don't eat enough/skip meals, you actually SLOW down your metabolism because your body goes into a "survival mode", so the few calories you consume they actually store as fat deposits.

Wake up, drink some coffee/tea, and eat: orange juice, whole grain toast, egg, and a yogurt. This is VERY balanced and will start your metabolism VERY EFFICIENTLY

then eat 5 200-300 calories snack-meals every 3 hours.
Make sure each snack meal contains veggies, fruits, whole grains, and protein.
An example: eat some carrots, a kiwi, some triscuits, and edamame (protein)
Another example: egg white omelet with chopped up onions, tomatoes, carrots, and mushrooms, and some whole grain toast with a 100% raspberry jam spread
-Mushrooms have HUGE health benefits

Basically, if you want to lose weight you actually will be more successful eating more calories of fruits and vegetables, instead of restricting calories.

How I know this: I am a college student studying nutrition. I know how to lose weight the healthy way. Some people think that cutting calories is enough, and sure it WORKS, but they will not have that "TONED" body they have in the mind; for example they're legs will get skinnier, but they may still have an awkward-sized midsection.

Finally, only drink water and juice, and may I suggest almond milk or coconut milk over dairy? They are actually delicious once you get used to it, have fewer calories than milk AND twice the calcium. They are a very very good nutritious beverage at low calories.

Like I said this is what I study, this is my passion. If you want more meal ideas ask! I also would like to know if you've taken my advice, so give me updates if you have the time:) I LOVE learning about peoples journeys with nutritional enlightenment.

Best of luck:) xx

Hello.

I pretty much understand the whole weight loss thing. My question is about calories.

Now everyone (including myself) always says that you need to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight. This seems pretty straight forward, but does that actually mean:

You eat 2500 calories a day
You need to burn AT LEAST 2501 calories to start to lose anything?

Because one day, I walked constantly for 7 hours. It wasn't planned: me and a friend walked to the city, browsed shops, then just took a long walk as the sun set, and then walked home. I used to have an app on my iPod Touch. You put in how much exercise you've done, and what you've eaten. I put "brisk walking, 7 hours" in, and it only said I burned 1600 calories?! So I would have had to burn 900 more calories (assuming I consume 2500 calories a day) ? Because that seems crazy. My body felt like jelly after all that walking, and I still needed to do MORE just to lose weight?

Any guidance?

Thanks!

Yes. To lose one pound, you must burn 3500 calories.

Now, keep in mind, that for most people the average basal metabolic rate is around 1800 calories. This is throughout a day, doing sedentary things such as sleeping, showering, food prep, cleaning around the house, you know typical things that wouldn't be considered "physical activity". Now if you walk for 7 hours, you are going to burn at LEAST ~1000 calories (walking is about 200 cals/hour).... That being said you are either on your way to losing weight or you need to eat some more if you are trying to maintain weight.

So, on this day, you probably burned at least 2700 calories, because you are always burning calories, even while you sleep. What I am trying to say is that your body wasn't only burning calories when you walked through the city, it was doing it before and after as well. You would've burned those "other 900 calories" you mentioned at some other point of the day, for sure.

Let me know if you have any more similar questions! xx

13/f So last year my waist was 28 inches and I had an hourglass figure but this year I'm 29 inches and I no longer look like I have one. What can I do to get my hourglass figure back and trim back down to 28 inches or less?

OBLIQUES OBLIQUES OBLIQUES!!! these are the side muscles. regular/typical ab exercises that come to mind won't work out these muscle groups, such as crunches or sit-ups only work out the rectus abdominus, aka 6 pack muscles. The internal obliques and external obliques run diagonally on your sides.

Here are some exercises that will tone up your waist!

Let me know if this works for you, or if you are interested in other exercises!!
Goodluck:) xx

My family and friends all tell me I am very light on my feet. But I know sometimes it means graceful but I am a former gymnast and now do ballet and am not too graceful yet. My friends all say that I jump like a gazelle. I am not too skinny because my bones are well built and I am pretty strong. Thanks!

I would say the following words are synonyms:
Elegant, quick, feathery, graceful, prancing, springy

Those are just the words that come to my mind when someone says "light on your feet." Hope it helped:)

I want to lose 10 or maybe 15 lbs in 2-3 weeks. Working out eating 1200 calories. Is that reasonable?
I'm 5'5" and 145 lbs

I am a Nutrition major in college, and I would say for 2-3 weeks a good amount is somewhere around 10. If you can lose 15, GREAT!..but that's gonna be hard. I also would suggest eating 1400 calories, because you can permanently lower your metabolic rate by eating too little. 1400 is diet standards, while still not depriving your body of energy and fuel. Try to stay away from fats, DONT be afraid of carbs, they are the primary fuel for exercise and brain activity. If you get hungry, eat LOTS of veggies and fruits..because they are nutrient dense with a high volume but low calories.

Good luck with you weight loss:) I am quite the health nut so if you have any more questions feel free to drop by another q in my inbox!
