Ok. I hate this kind of situations because someone always get hurt without a reason, so it's unfair.
But as long as you feel you need to break up with him, do it without thinking twice.
But abour becoming friends, as many times as you say/believe it's not going to be weird/awkward, well you're very wrong.
Relationship in the world, start as friendship and then goes to relationship but never goes back to friendship, so when your going to break up with him, your breaking the relationship itself, so there is no going back to friendship, but that doesn't mean you can't talk at all, and be all awkward but dont you ever think you'll actually talk on the phone or hang out.
Even though if you feel from your side it wouldn't feel weird because you never liked him the way he does, then he'll feel weird about it. But what's very wrong when you ask him to be friends he won't tell you no but it's going to be very wrong and something very bad is going to happen in the end between you.
You made a mistake by going out with him in the first place now get what you deserve by loosing him.
