Recently, I was taught factoring and now I am applying it to word problems. I don't get what to do, why to do it, or how to get the right answer. Can someone help?
A problem that really stumps me is:
*The sum of two numbers is 25 and the sum of their squares is 313. Find the numbers.
I got the equation x²+(25-x)²=313.
Is that correct? If it is, what is the next step? I don't know how to set it to zero, factor it, and then arrive at the correct answer in the {_,_} format.

x^2+y^2=313
x+ y = 25
-y -y
x=25-y
(25-y)^2+y^2=313
(25-y)(25-y)+y^2=313
FOIL that..
solve for y
use the y value to find x by substituting it in to one of the original equations i gave you at the top.

I appreciate the help but that is not even close to what we learned. We have to set it equal to zero like i mentioned. It's quite aggravating!
