advice
I am very confused. =] Any help is appreciated!
1) What is the mininum wage now?
2) What kind of jobs can one get whose salary goes beyond the minimum wage (lifeguarding, etc)? Only jobs with training or can entry-level newbies do anything?
3) What kind of jobs are open to 16+ college bound persons?
4) It would probably be better to get a job I would have a greater chance of landing a job if it were "full time"? So that means working over the summer as opposed to weekends during the school year, right? How many work hours would that average per week approximately?
5) How does the process work? I go in, ask for an application, fill it out, hand it back and wait for them to call and schedule an interview? If all job processes are different, what is the general process usually?
6) Any other tips.
Thanks in advance!
1) i live in ny. minimum wage is 7.15 it depends on the state
2) entry level jobs may certainly get over minimum wage. im currently working in a recreation department in a nursing home earnign 9 an hour. i did tennis lessons over the summer and earned 12 an hour. i know someone who worked in home depot and got 11 per hour. if you work as a lifeguard thats definitely over minimum wage, and my friends who did that get raises every yearr they come back. the more responsibility your job has, the more money you will get. something like a grocery store, mcdonalds, etc will be minimum wage.
3) cashiers, fast food, lifeguard, camp conselors, waitressing, even somethin like i am doing, working in a nursing home keeping the elderly busy with activities.
4) not necessarily. some jobs just need someone to fill in part time. if you say you can work weekends, thats a plus. you can say you can work full time but only mon-fri. but the person who has weekends free could certainly get the job. full time in the summer could be something like 9-5. my friends are camp counselors in the summer and their hours are i think 9-5 which is 40 hours per week. full time at mcdonalds could be different being that they are opeon 7 days a week, many of them 24 hours so you and your boss would discuss work hours. full time at mcdonalds could consist of 4pm-12 or 8-4 , etc.
5) job processs could work in different ways. you may respond to an add in the paper. call in by phone and arrange an interview and bring a resume like i did. ( dont panic, i ddint have much working experience either but i found a website that gave me a format. i filled in the blanks like name, address, education, voluunteer work, interests, qualities you have that would suit the job such as friendliness, reliability, etc.
references and all that good stuff and i got hired!
you could fill out the application online and get a phone call. you could walk in or call random places askign if they need help *this is how i got my current waitressing job*
other tips..hm
-go to the interview dressed nice
-be aggressive/persisntant. meaning give frequent calls to jobs you want, follow up on applications you fill out, etc.
good luck!
