Hello Sabine, I was given Clamovid 625 (amoxycillin [as trihydrate] and clavulanic acid [as potassium clavulanate]) for my throat infection.
I've taken 5 of these antibiotics now (I have to take 10 in total) but I don't feel any improvement at all. In fact, I feel that it's getting worse. Is there something wrong with the medication?

Hi. Call your doctor. Clamovid is sold in the US as Clavamox and I have only ever seen it used in veterinary applications.
Every antibiotic is suited to different types of bacteria. In the case of Clamovid, it can be used to treat the following:
PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
The combination of amoxicillin, a bactericidal penicillin antibiotics with a broad spectrum of activity, and clavulanic acid, an irreversible beta-lactamase inhibitor forming stable, inactive complexes with the enzymes, thereby protecting amoxicillin from degradation, possesses a broad spectrum of activity. The activity of the combination is extended from microorganisms susceptible to amoxicillin alone to also include amoxicillin-resistant beta-lactamase producing organisms:
* Gram-positive aerobes (S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, S. viridans, S. bovis, S. aureus, S. epidermidis, Listeria sp., Enterococcus sp.),
* Gram-negative aerobes (H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, E. coli, Proteus sp., Klebsiella sp., N. gonorrhoeae, N. meningitidis, Pasteurella multocida),
* Anaerobes (Peptococcus sp., Peptostreptococcus sp., Clostridium sp., Bacteroides sp., Actinomyces israellii).
I would assume you don't have one of these bacteria - it's likely a different type. Alternately, it could be one of these things which has already been exposed to Clamovid and is therefore already resistant to its effects or you could be dealing with a viral throat infection (which will not respond to any antibiotics and must run its course).
Did your physician do a throat culture? If so, s/he might have identified which organism is causing the problem by now. It may be an organism not covered by the two agents in Clamovid. Either way, your physician can tell you whether you need to allow more time for the Clamovid to work (which I don't think is likely the problem) or whether you need to switch to a different antibiotic.

Hey Sabine. Thanks a lot for the detailed info. I found out that I have strep throat but I'm feeling much better now. I used listerine mouth wash to speed up the process of killing the bacteria. My throat's recovering. You're a nice lady =)
