I joined track this year, and there's a boy on the team that is super cute and really nice. I've talked to him a couple times, but barely at all. i doubt he even knows my name. but he seems so awesome... i really want to get to know him. However, i'm ABSOLUTELY NOT going to randomly start talking to him. (please, if you're going to tell me to anyways, don't.) It needs to be gradual, at least until we're on speaking terms. So... tips not involving walking directly up to him and talking? PLEASE? (link)

Well, you should start making eye contact and smiling. Maybe when you feel comfortable, you will start talking because its not like it will be random cuz you guys have been acknowledging each other.
