Q: well, theres this girl. she is in my piano class, i think that by having small talk every class i could get closer and closer to the point where we're friends

If you're in a piano class together, that's the first common ground right there. Start with some small talk, but find out what else she's interested in. Find other things you have in common, talk about that, ask her about her pets if she has them. Build it up to the point where she starts to enjoy talking to you. If this is a thing where you eventually want to be more than friends, ask her out to lunch or a cup of coffee one day.
By the way, girls who play piano generally rock.
