well, theres this girl. she is in my piano class, i think that by having small talk every class i could get closer and closer to the point where we're friends

Of course you're doing the right thing! One day, compliment her hair, or like her makeup, or like just something on her. And then the next day tell her how much you love how she dresses, and you think she looks pretty all the time. :]
Girls love compliments, just don't overdo it.
