about

I'm facinated with the way things work. I've always been told that I'm creative, and I give good advice, but that isn't the most interesting thing about me. I feel like I'm a deeper person than most people know, and so I'm a volcano of advice. All of my friends/aquaintences come to me in time of need for advice, so I suppose I must be good at it. I'm always looking for something a little bit more complicated even among the simplist of things. I'm overly perceptive and analytical. Feel free to contact me directly with questions through the website.

I am aware that this will not get an award for brevity, but humor me.

Background info: I am someone who is known to have an incredibly individual, crazy, random style. I love uniqueness, and I hate wearing things that I know what 1 million other people are wearing. This goes for anything of the sort, whether it's a studded belt or a short little Hollister skirt- BUT this question is mostly geared towards the latter (to clarify, the clothing that the so-called "pretty people" wear).

I'm really trying to comprehend how people can like clothing like what is sold at Hollister or those type of stores. I guess it's almost humorous since I know the majority of people ask the same question about my outfits a good deal of the time- what could she possibly be thinking with that outfit? But I just don't understand...and I'm honestly trying to be as accepting of others expressions as I wish they would be of my own.

What joy do you get out of wearing these mass manufactured clothes that aren't even worth taking two looks at? They are so BORING and unoriginal and so..lacking in any creativity. Not to mention, those skirts practically show butt cheeks and things I DO NOT WANT TO SEE! EW! Between the false advertising (Feefee's stupid ass coconut shack, etc.) and the atrocious amount of skin shown, I can only wonder what America's "pretty people" are thinking and if they really are so "pretty."

Can someone please help me understand?

I understand completely. I too do not appriciate the bore that is known as the supposed 'in-style'. Though, people are lemmings. So, in the attempt to explain my journey towards tolerance I turn to social philosophy, rather than merely style.

We, as a species, want to be accepted. At the same time we want to be appriciated for our differences, or that which makes us unique. So, in your case and mine, we have a style that speaks "difference". For many others, such as those who shop at hollister or wear the ug-boot, their style says, "I am the same".

So- we are appriciated for a very obvious reason, a will to stand alone, or outside the crowd: it screams individuality, and for that we are wanted. Where as, most people do not of the audacity or courage to assert a visual difference, they assimilate to become wanted.

As well, as a society we are educated to believe that there is a formula for success. Which includes: dress, mannerisms, associations, gender roles and the like. We are led to believe that there is only one type of person, which many will pretend to be, that is appropriate for success or to participate in this culture.

Believe it or not, the real world is just like highschool where we judge people based on their appearances, where they fit in, their class, wealth etc... and you and I... the way we might cringe at mini skirts and popped collars.. they do the same to us. It will never change.

What is important, however, is not to discount peoples personalities based on these visual differences. I've met a handful of wonderful people that participate in sororities, wear polos, and act like paris hilton, but in the end we all have something to learn from eachother- and we shouldn't let (of all things) clothes separate us. After all, we're all naked underneath. HA> hope that helps.

(Rating: 5) Haha..yeah...I've often marveled at how much the standard of beauty would change if we were all just naked...because we all really are the same. What you say makes sense and I've had many similar thoughts. If you'd ever like to chat, my AIM is raincoateaster. Have a good night/morning/whatever. ;)
