advice

I am a former self-injurer, and I finally stopped cutting at the end of 8th grade (I'm going into 9th). I've been happy since the end of 8th grade and haven't had a reason to cut, or I'v refrained myself from cutting. But that's how I deal with stress. And I'm afraid I'll relapse this year from stress. I've been to therapy, and I write a lot. Is there any other way I could possibly deal with stress that isn't destructive?

thanks in advance!

Recognize the symptoms of stress

Look at your lifestyle and see how it can be changed – at work, home in your family and your
schedule.

Use relaxation techniques – yoga, meditation, deep breathing, massage

Exercise – one of the best stress reducers of all

Time management – do essential things then prioritize the others, but not at the detriment of friends and family.

Watch your diet – alcohol, caffeine, sugar, fats and tobacco all strain the body’s ability to cope with stress.

Get enough rest and sleep

Talk to others – friends, councilors or in a support group

Help others – volunteer work is very rewarding and a great stress reducer

Get away for a while – either by watching a movie, reading a book, or even going away on vacation.

The idea is to have some time to yourself

Work off your anger physically – walking, gardening, spring cleaning

Give in occasionally – avoid quarrels

Tackle one thing at a time – don’t take on too much at once

Don’t try to be perfect.

Ease up on your criticism of others

Don’t be too competitive

Make the first move a friendly one

Have fun!! Laugh and enjoy yourself.
