What makes a plant - a plant, because a tree isn't really a plant, its a tree.

Or does photosynthesis constitute plantness?

A tree is part of the plant family. Mainly because, photosynthesis does constitute plantess. Anything that grows and buds that cannot think for itself is considered a plant. :)
