I really want to learn to be an actress, even if it's just to see if I have what it takes. I would love to attend some sort of school for it or something, but I live in the middle of nowhere. Mom would never let me go to California or anywhere where all the good acting oppurtunies are. So how am I supposed to "follow my dreams"? (link)

I'm afraid that acting tends to be one of those all-or-nothing vocations, unless you're really lucky and are just spontaneously discovered at Walgreens. [But be careful with that; I just saw something on Dateline about a guy who lured girls into his home that way and killed them.] My brother is an indie filmmaker, and I graduated from an arts school where I studied acting, so I know a bit about the pressures of the acting world. There are so many more people who want to act than giant blockbuster roles available to them. I don't mean to be a total downer-- I would start with a local theater. Or look for indie photographers or filmmakers in your area (but like i said, be careful. If you go to an audition, bring someone with you.) The more experience you can get on stage and in front of cameras, the better. You might also want to read up on method acting. The main names in that area of expertise are Stanislovsky and Boleslavsky. Find monologues and scripts and read them. Watch movies carefully, and examine what makes people convincing and what doesn't. All this stuff will help you decide if acting is something you really love. If you're really into it, your mom might even be convinced. If you're really into it, check out my school--Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. They also offer a summer program and scholarships. Alumni include Jewel, Josh Groban, Anthony Rapp from Rent, and Tom Hulce from Amadeus and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. With acting, it's all about passion, and that comes through both in your actual performance and what you know. So read up, and get excited!!
