Do you really believe that you'll be in more pain if you break up with this person than you are in right now? I have been in a relationship with somebody before where we were in love with each other, but I was never satisfied with the way things were. There were things that I wanted--that I needed, that he couldn't give me. And it was hard to leave the relationship when you love someone that deeply. But I did what I had to do.
I would talk to your significant other and be honest with them. Tell them what you want from the relationship and ask them what they want. If you two don't want the same things, then it might be time to start looking for those things elsewhere. I know it may be hard to imagine yourself with someone else, but they're is someone out there who can give you what you want. You just have to take that chance.
