I've been trying to be a good singer lately. I went for lessons but they did absolutely nothing. I've been singing everyday after school for the past 3-4 years. It's the only time I can because I get embarassed. We had a school musical and when I had to sing to tryout, I choked. But before that, I sang for this girl that wanted to hear me and we both agreed I did good. So bottom line: How can I become a better singer and get over being afraid.

Well, to become a better singer...sing as much as you can. Sing along to the radio or CD's. Sing in the shower. Sing in front of close friends. If your school has a choir, join it! Maybe you can try lessonsagain, at a different place. Really focus on breathing techniques, lifting your soft palette, etc. (I've been taking lessons for a while and have learned so much...), and learn to support your voice.

As for stage fright...the only way to get over your fear is to face it. Start with singing in front of one close friend...then maybe a group of your friends. Don't put a spotlight on yourself at first - have a party and sing karaoke, or something. Have a good time with it. Then, maybe go to your choir teacher or someone of the like, and ask her if you can sing and ask for tips and stuff. Then, try out for another musical. Take a deep breath, and focus on the things you learn in lessons. And always have fun, cause everything's better when you're having fun!
