I just recently bought a HUGE enclosure for my 4 year old male chinchilla and i'd now like to get him a buddy! Chinchillas are social creatures and being a mother i dont always get to spend the much needed quality time with him anymore.

My question isnt HOW do i introduce them, its CAN i introduce a 4 year old MALE with a younger chinchilla? and also would it being a female MATTER at all?

I dont want them breeding, and my 4 year old isnt fixed yet so i thought about a male but ive heard they can be awfully territorial and im worried they might NEVER like each other and then what am i gonna do!? i only have ONE cage here!

should i be looking at males or females? should i get my 4 year old fixed and then look for a female? or try to find another male and HOPE they like each other??

ive done lots of research on them but i havnt found any answers on this issue specifically.

One of my best friends in high school had two chinchillas. (I say had because I havent talked to her in a while b/c I moved across the country). One was a female and one was a male. They had a huge cage and they let them come out sometimes. They always got along whenever I saw them and I saw them a lot. They loved interacting with each other!! I think he (yours) would love having a playmate/friend chinchilla and I know my friend never had a problem. You could always (when/if you find another chinchilla) see if the person selling would let you bring yours to see how they would interact together. I know they're really fast and they have bigger cages so you would probably have to bring a smaller cage to put him in in the car unless your cage will fit...then when you to get the person's place see how they interact in that person's cage or just out and about. But they are pretty hard to catch when you let them out. I'm sure most people wouldn't mind if you asked if you could bring yours to see how they interacted :). Oh and yes you should get yours fixed . :D
