A pretty common term for it is 'bokeh' [it's a japanese term].

It's basically how the aperture that the photographer uses interprets the depth of field. A large aperture, such as f1.4, will provide excellent depth of field.

Another interesting note: you can purchase lenses that have different shaped apertures other than circles [stars, triangles, etc.], and then the bokeh would be the shape of the aperture opening.
